Overcrowding in the emergency department (ED) has become an increasingly significant worldwide public health problem in the last decade. It is a consequence of simultaneous increasing demand for health care and a deficit in available hospital beds and ED beds, as for example it occurs in mass casualty incidents, but also in other conditions causing a shortage of hospital beds. In Italy in the last 12-15 years, there has been a huge increase in the activity of the ED, and several possible interventions, with specific organizational procedures, have been proposed. In 2004 in the United Kingdom, the rule that 98 % of ED patients should be seen and then admitted or discharged within 4 h of presentation to the ED ('4 h rule') was introduced, and it has been shown to be very effective in decreasing ED crowding, and has led to the development of further acute care clinical indicators. This manuscript represents a synopsis of the lectures on overcrowding problems in the ED of the Third Italian GREAT Network Congress, held in Rome, 15-19 October 2012, and hopefully, they may provide valuable contributions in the understanding of ED crowding solutions.

Summary: This article introduces the background and objectives of the Gaia-ESO Survey, as well as the work of three working groups involved in the survey. By selecting observation targets based on public and private photometry and using ground-based kinematic and astronomical data to define the positions of stellar evolution, the survey team has successfully collected the largest, most accurate, and most homogeneous spectroscopic dataset on open star clusters ever achieved.

Summary: The study aimed to determine carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances for evolved giants in the globular cluster NGC 1851 to investigate the coeval nature of the double populations of stars. The results showed differences in mean metallicity, C/N ratio, and s-process dominated element-to-iron abundance ratios between the two populations, suggesting that NGC 1851 is composed of two clusters with different ages.

Summary: This study investigates a sample of planetary nebulae in the galaxy M 31 to determine their physico-chemical properties and infer the masses of their central stars. The results provide observational constraints for the stellar progenitors that produce the cutoff in the planetary nebula luminosity function.

Summary: AGC 226178 and NGVS 3543 are two systems adjacent to the Virgo cluster. NGVS 3543's stellar population is inconsistent with its distance from the cluster, suggesting it is a foreground object. AGC 226178's stellar population is consistent with a young object in the Virgo cluster.

Summary: This study examines the far-infrared/submillimeter emissivity of nine nearby spiral galaxies and finds that the measured emissivity is lower than predicted when the dust is heated by a strong radiation field. These results have important implications for current dust models.

Summary: We used panoramic optical spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope/MUSE to investigate the nature of five candidate extremely isolated low-mass star-forming regions towards the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Four of the candidates were found to be part of the Virgo cluster and have mean metallicity significantly higher than expected. These findings suggest the possible emergence of a new class of stellar systems intimately linked to the gas duty cycle within galaxy clusters.

Young, Blue, and Isolated Stellar Systems in the Virgo Cluster. II. A New Class of Stellar System

Summary: We discuss the discovery of five blue stellar systems, one of which is a distant galaxy cluster and the remaining four are low mass systems with young blue stars and irregular morphologies. These systems have high metallicities, indicating gas stripped from more massive galaxies, and their properties suggest they may have formed through ram pressure stripping in the intracluster medium.

The Gaia-ESO survey: Placing constraints on the origin of r-process elements

Summary: The observation of gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves from the merger of two neutron stars has sparked a renewed interest in the origin of r-process elements. This study aims to investigate the origin of r-process elements in the Galactic thin-disc population. By comparing observations with a chemical evolution model, it is found that Eu in the thin disc is predominantly produced by sources with short lifetimes, such as magneto-rotationally driven supernovae.

Hourihane, A. Gonneau, L. Morbidelli

Summary: In this study, the authors used the Gaia-ESO survey data to analyze the radial abundance and abundance-to-iron ratio gradients in open clusters of the Milky Way. They found that the [Fe/H] gradient can be approximated with a two-slope shape, steeper in the inner regions and flatter in the outer regions. Different behaviors were observed for elements belonging to different nucleosynthesis channels. The youngest clusters in the inner disc had lower metallicity and a flatter gradient.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Old super-metal-rich visitors from the inner Galaxy

Summary: This study reports the discovery of a group of old dwarf stars with high metallicity in the solar vicinity, suggesting they may have originated from the inner regions of the Milky Way before migrating to the solar neighborhood. These stars have low eccentricity orbits and reach a maximum height from the Galactic plane. The findings provide insights into the origin and evolution of stars near the Sun.

Summary: The Gaia-ESO Survey is a public spectroscopic survey that observed over 100,000 stars in the Milky Way from 2011 to 2018 and released its final results in May 2022. It is unique in its coverage of stars of all spectral types and provides a comprehensive database of stellar properties and characteristics. The survey's final data release includes radial velocities, stellar parameters, elemental abundances, rotational velocities, and other important information for more than 114,000 stars.

Time evolution of Ce as traced by APOGEE using giant stars observed with the Kepler, TESS and K2 missions

Summary: The study on the abundance trends of cerium (Ce) in stars reveals a strong dependence on metallicity and star formation history, with non-monotonic behavior of [Ce/Fe] ratio peaking around -0.2 dex. Younger stars show higher [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/a] ratios than older stars, indicating the contribution of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars to Galactic chemical enrichment. Additionally, the trends of [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/a] become steeper towards the outer regions of the Galactic disc, suggesting more intense star formation in the inner regions. Cerium has potential as an element to constrain stellar yields and the formation of the Milky Way disc, but spectroscopic uncertainties remain a challenge due to large scatter in the studied relations.

The computation of interstellar extinction in photoionized nebulae

Christophe Morisset, Romano L. M. Corradi, Jorge Garcia-Rojas, Antonio Mampaso, David Jones, Karen B. B. Kwitter, Laura Magrini, Eva Villaver

Summary: This study investigates the discrepancies between the proper plasma analysis method (PPAP) and the use of standard values to calculate physical conditions. The results show that while the PPAP method accurately measures plasma properties, there is some error in measuring interstellar extinction. Therefore, the authors emphasize the need to critically assess the choice of reference lines when using the PPAP method and ensure that results are obtained for non-de-reddened line ratios.

Origin of neutron-capture elements with the Gaia-ESO survey: the evolution of s- and r-process elements across the Milky Way

Marta Molero, Laura Magrini, Francesca Matteucci, Donatella Romano, Marco Palla, Gabriele Cescutti, Carlos Viscasillas Vazquez, Emanuele Spitoni

Summary: We investigate the origin of neutron-capture elements in the Galactic thin disc by analysing their abundance patterns and radial gradients. Our detailed two-infall chemical evolution model includes nucleosynthesis prescriptions for neutron-capture elements and considers different synthesis sources. We compare our model predictions with data from the Gaia-ESO survey and find good agreement regarding the [Eu/Fe] versus [Fe/H] diagram and the [Fe/H] gradient slope. However, the predicted [Eu/H] radial gradient slope is steeper than observed, prompting discussion on Galaxy-formation scenarios and stellar radial migration effects. We also note slight underpredictions for Mo and Nd and successful reproduction of the [Pr/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trend.
