Mesoporous alumina with a narrow effective pore diameter distribution has been prepared using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-modified sols of hydrous Al2O3 and Al2O3-ZrO2. We compare the microstructures of nanoporous aluminas prepared from electrochemically produced unmodified and modified sols of hydrous oxides and describe the formation of highly ordered mesoporous structures from a mixture of modified sols of hydrous metal oxides differing in chemical nature. Microstructural studies of uni-and biporous permeable nanosystems during heat treatment demonstrate that the pore diameter distribution in the mesoporous oxides prepared from the modified sols remains unchanged at calcination temperatures of 700 degrees C and lower. The microstructure and phase composition of the oxides depend on the initial properties of the sols.

Summary: X-ray analysis and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to study the microstructure and properties of mechanochemically synthesized Al/Cu9Al4 composites and their sintered materials. The research revealed that a composite structure with uniform distribution of particles can be formed even after a short period of mechanical activation. Additionally, the hardness of sintered composites is approximately twice that of pure aluminum without reinforcing additives.

Summary: The products of the mechanochemical reduction of iron oxide with aluminum were studied using X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The results showed that the products contain iron, alpha-Al2O3, and a large amount of spinel (hercynite), and the reduction of iron oxide proceeds faster with a twofold increase in the aluminum content. Excess aluminum reacts with the reduced iron to form intermetallic FexAly phases, mainly FeAl strengthened by alpha-Al2O3 particles.

Summary: In this study, monodispersed micron-sized spherical copper and cuprous oxide particles were prepared by reducing copper 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetate with benzyl alcohol. The method developed is simple, low cost, and highly scalable. The as-synthesized copper powders may have applications as metallic fillers in ink and paste formulations for 2D and 3D micro-printing to fabricate functional components and devices.

Selective laser melting of Zn-Si-substituted hydroxyapatite

N. Bulina, A. Titkov, D. D. Isaev, S. Makarova, S. G. Baev, A. M. Vorobyev, V. P. Bessmeltsev, N. Z. Lyakhov

Summary: The behavior of hydroxyapatite containing zinc and silicate ions under selective laser melting at 10.6 μm radiation was studied for the first time. It was found that heating the mechanochemically synthesized material with a substitution degree of x = 0.2 through scanning laser spot enables recrystallization with retention of substituent ions in the apatite structure. Heating under different conditions leads to the formation of different impurity phases, with hydroxyapatites with higher degrees of substitution (x = 1, 2) being unstable under both heating regimes.
