Monodispersed silver nanoparticles (Ag-0 NPs) have been first prepared on the basis of a postsynthesis via mild reduction from a new crystalline supramolecular hybrid solid assembled from Ag+ ions and decamethylcucurbit[5]uril (Me10CB[5]). Uniform growth of nearly spherical Ag-0 NPs with an average size of ca. 4.4 nm was observed on the organic Me10CB[S] support to form Ag@Me10CB[5] composite material. The as-synthesized composite material was characterized by a range of physical measurements (PXRD, TGA, XPS, ICP, TEM, etc.) and was further exploited as a heterogeneous catalyst for the reduction of various nitrophenols in the presence of NaBH4. The kinetics of the reduction process was monitored under various experimental conditions. The Ag@Me10CB[S] composite material showed excellent catalytic performance over the reduction reactions and remained active after several consecutive cycles.

Summary: This study successfully achieved solar-driven CO2 conversion to C2+ products using highly selective photocatalysts. By controlling the growth of Bi2S3 on the surface of CdS, the conversion of CO2 to C2H4 was achieved. Experimental and theoretical results confirmed that Bi atoms serve as catalytic sites for CO2 conversion.

Summary: Nanopesticides have been proposed as a promising strategy for controlling pathogens and delaying the development of resistance. In this study, a new type of nanosilica fungicide was developed and demonstrated to effectively control late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. The mesoporous silica nanoparticles showed the highest antimicrobial activity, inducing oxidative stress and cell structure damage in the pathogen. This work provides new insights into the antimicrobial mechanism of nanosilica and highlights the potential of nanoparticles as green and efficient nanofungicides for late blight control.

Reactive Oxygen Species Triggered Oxidative Degradation of Polystyrene in the Gut of Superworms (Zophobas atratus Larvae)

Zhi Chen, Yilan Zhang, Ruizhi Xing, Christopher Rensing, Jian Lu, Mingli Chen, Sining Zhong, Shungui Zhou

Summary: This study demonstrates the oxidative decomposition of polystyrene (PS) in the gut of superworms and reveals its effect on plastic metabolism. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were found to be generated extensively in the larva gut, and PS consumption led to a significant increase in ROS. Further investigation suggested that the oxidative depolymerization of PS was caused by the combinatorial effect of ROS and extracellular oxidases of gut microbes. This work provides new insights into the underlying biochemical mechanisms of plastic degradation in the gut.

Nitrogen-doped-CQDs/schwertmannites as visible-light-responsive Fenton catalysts for the degradation of chlortetracycline and related cytotoxicity

Yu-Hang Xu, Xiang-Ji Liu, Ji-Zun Xiang, Zhi-Qiang Zhang, Xing-Xing Qiao, Ya-Feng Li, Qiu-Xiang He, Jian Lue

Summary: In this study, viable heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts (NCS) are synthesized by in situ compounding nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with schwertmannite (SCH). The NCS catalysts exhibit greatly enhanced capacity for chlortetracycline (CTC) degradation with a remarkable efficiency of 95.12% at a wide pH range (3.0-7.0). The study also identifies the main active species in the degradation process and proposes a possible degradation mechanism, while verifying the cytotoxicity of CTC degradation intermediates through co-culturing with E. coli. This research provides a new strategy to overcome the disadvantages of photo-Fenton processes and develop new technologies for advanced water treatment.

Facile synthesis of compact CdS-CuS heterostructures for optimal CO2-to-syngas photoconversion

Jian-Ying Xu, Xiang-Ji Liu, Han-Nan Huang, Yu-Hang Xu, Zhou Zhong, Ya-Feng Li, Raymond Jianxiong Zeng, Jian Lu, Rong Cao

Summary: Herein, a facile two-step synthetic pathway was developed to construct compact CdS-CuS heterostructures for syngas production via CO2 photoreduction. The CdS-CuS-2 photocatalyst exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity with a syngas yield of approximately 8446 mu mol g(-1), which was approximately 5-fold higher than that of pristine CdS. Syngas with different proportions (H-2/CO) could be readily produced by adjusting the CdS/CuS ratio in the photocatalysts.
