Summary: The study found that the BCG vaccine may have an impact on the severity and mortality of COVID-19, identifying genetic variations through analyzing shared DEGs and PPI network, and discovering potential therapeutic candidates. Further investigation into the genetic interactions between the BCG vaccine and SARS-CoV-2 could help combat the spread of COVID-19.

Summary: The study found that countries with active BCG vaccination programs for the past 15 years had lower COVID-19 related mortality rates, with mortality rates increasing significantly with a higher percentage of population over 65. A higher total population and longer implementation of BCG vaccination programs were significantly associated with improved COVID-19 related mortality rates.

Summary: The study found that a strong in vivo immune response to BCG vaccine is associated with a reduced risk of developing MS more than 30 years later. The strength of TST reactivity is linked to decreased MS risk, suggesting a potential protective mechanism against the disease.

Summary: Providing BCG + OPV vaccination to neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit was shown to be safe and possibly protective against fatal infections, particularly in reducing infectious deaths. However, there was no effect of BCG vaccination on deaths due to prematurity and perinatal complications.

Summary: Newborn screening for SCID was conducted in Singapore, with no SCID cases detected but 13 cases of non-SCID T-cell lymphopenia (TCL) identified. The results showed that patients with normal CD3+ T cell counts and transient idiopathic TCL tolerated BCG vaccination well without complications.

Summary: BCG-induced osteomyelitis is an extremely rare systemic adverse reaction in immunocompetent children after BCG vaccination, with correct diagnosis frequently missed. This article presented 4 clinical cases reported over a 10-year period in Lithuania, a high TB incidence country, and briefly reviewed the clinical, management, and treatment features of the disease.

Summary: A more effective vaccine against tuberculosis is urgently needed. The recombinant vaccine VPM1002 has been found to be safer and more efficacious than the existing vaccine BCG in mice models. In this study, the safety and immunogenicity of VPM1002 and its derivatives, PDX and NUOG, were assessed in juvenile goats. The results showed that VPM1002 and NUOG induced anti-tuberculous immunity with a comparable safety profile to BCG.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the clinical features and risk factors for mortality of tuberculous aneurysms. The study found that TB-induced aneurysms often spontaneously ruptured shortly after TB symptoms appeared, while BCG-induced aneurysms showed a longer time to rupture. The study also identified rupture and lack of combined therapy as significant risk factors for mortality, with a recommendation for early intervention to improve prognosis.

Summary: The study investigates factors contributing to different impacts of COVID-19 at the country level. Findings show a significant inverse correlation between BCG vaccination rate and COVID-19 mortality, while per capita GDP and median age positively correlate with COVID-19 mortality. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases correlate significantly with per capita GDP and testing rates.

Summary: This study indicates that fibrin clot inhibitors and statins have no significant impact on the oncological prognosis of BCG therapy for bladder cancer, and there is no need to stop using them or switch to other drugs during treatment. Large-scale multi-center prospective research is still required to confirm these findings.

Summary: Urinary IL-10 and serum TNF-alpha can significantly predict initial complete response (ICR) after BCG induction in high-risk NMIBC. Moreover, changes in urinary IL-10, serum CTLA-4, TFs (GATA3, T-bet, and FoxP3) and GATA3(+)/T-bet(+) ratio after BCG induction can independently predict further BCG response. These markers could be useful in clinical practice in cases of severe BCG shortage.

Summary: This study investigated the non-specific effects (NSE) of non-live rabies vaccine in piglets and the potential modifying effect of maternal priming with the rabies vaccine. The results showed that the rabies vaccine may have a beneficial effect in female piglets, but a negative effect in (castrated) male piglets from rabies-naive sows. However, these effects had waned by 12 weeks of age.

Summary: This study conducted a trial on low weight infants in Guinea-Bissau and did not find an association between early diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine administration and increased mortality in female infants. The differences in results compared to previous studies may be partly due to a decline in overall mortality and changes in vaccination practices.

Summary: Despite the low official number of COVID-19 cases, a study in urban Guinea-Bissau found a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity. Most of the antibody-positive individuals had not been ill. The official PCR-confirmed COVID-19 cases have significantly underestimated the prevalence of COVID-19 during the pandemic.

For men diagnosed with PD, high intelligence is the only early life indicator associated with better survival.

Summary: Malnutrition is an important contributing factor to child mortality in Guinea-Bissau. Despite a significant decline in child mortality, changes in the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) distribution explain only a small portion of the decline. Summary: Symptoms in the urogenital organs are common in MSA, and our study suggests that infection of the genitourinary tract could trigger alphaSyn aggregation, leading to MSA diagnosis. Urinary tract infections are associated with future MSA diagnosis and impact both men and women. Bacterial infection of the urinary bladder triggers synucleinopathy in mice, indicating a potential link between bacterial infections and MSA.
