Discordant SOX-1 antibodies results in paraneoplastic Lambert-Eaton syndrome diagnosis by the clinical laboratory

Adela Pozo-Giraldez, Enrique Rodriguez-Borja, Macarena Diaz-Gimenez, Arturo Carratala-Calvo, Pablo Magro-Pose, Jaume Perez-Griera

Summary: In this case study, a 72-year-old female patient presented with progressive girdle weakness, sensation of heaviness in the lower limbs, circulatory problems, and instability when walking, leading to a diagnosis of paraneoplastic Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). Discordant results between immunoblot and indirect immunofluorescence testing suggested the presence of specific SOX1 antibody and underlying tumor.

Lymphopenia in hospitalized patients and its relationship with severity of illness and mortality

Juan Carlos Andreu-Ballester, Aurelio Pons-Castillo, Antonio Gonzalez-Sanchez, Antonio Llombart-Cussac, Maria Jose Cano, Carmen Cuellar, Aleksandar R. Zivkovic

Summary: Lymphopenia is common in hospitalized patients, especially in infectious pathologies, and is closely related to disease severity and mortality risk. It should be considered as a clinical diagnostic criterion for defining Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.

Laparoscopic Versus Open Incisional Hernia Repair: Long-Term Follow-up Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Francisco Asencio, Juan Carbo, Ramon Ferri, Salvador Peiro, Javier Aguilo, Inmaculada Torrijo, Sebastian Barber, Raul Canovas, Juan Carlos Andreu-Ballester

Summary: In incisional ventral hernias with wall defects up to 15 cm wide, laparoscopic repair seems to be as safe and effective as open techniques, with no long-term differences in recurrence and reoperation rates or global quality of life, although lack of statistical power does not allow definitive conclusions on equivalence between alternatives.

Effects of remote ischemic postconditioning on HIF-1α and other markers in on-pump cardiac surgery

Jose Garcia-de-la-Asuncion, Tania Moreno, Alejandro Duca, Nuria Garcia-del-Olmo, Jaume Perez-Griera, Javier Belda, Marina Soro, Eva Garcia-del-Olmo

Summary: The study showed that remote ischemic postconditioning after on-pump cardiac surgery can significantly increase HIF-1 alpha levels, improve arterial oxygenation, and cardiac markers in patients.

Anisakis simplex: Immunomodulatory effects of larval antigens on the activation of Toll like Receptors

Vega Zamora, Juan Carlos Andreu-Ballester, Marta Rodero, Carmen Cuellar

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanisms by which Anisakis simplex modifies its host immune system through larval antigens interacting with Toll-Like-Receptors (TLRs). The findings showed that the larval antigens had specific mechanisms to modify the innate responses of the host, influencing different inflammatory responses in different mouse strains. The results contribute to a better understanding of allergy-related diseases and specific mechanisms of A. simplex immune responses.

Changes of CD3+CD56+γδ T cell number and apoptosis during hospital admission are related to mortality in septic patients

J. C. Andreu-Ballester, M. A. Arribas, M. Rico, C. Garcia-Ballesteros, L. Galindo-Regal, R. Sorando-Serra, L. Albert, A. Navarro, F. Lopez-Chulia, F. Peydro, C. Cuellar

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in γδT cell count and the progression of sepsis. The results showed that the number of γδT cells decreased with the severity of sepsis, particularly in non-surviving patients, while cell apoptosis increased.

Expansion of T regulatory lymphocytes by murine bone marrow dendritic cells previously stimulated with Anisakis simplex larval antigens

Vega Zamora, Marta Rodero, Alexandra Ibanez-Escribano, Juan C. Andreu-Ballester, Susana Mendez, Carmen Cuellar

Summary: Anisakis simplex antigens have the ability to increase the frequency of T-regs, which in turn produce IL-10 and IFN-gamma. The host genetic base plays an essential role in the development of anti-Anisakis immune responses (Th2, Th1, T-reg).

Corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen support? Yes, but not for everyone: Effect of corticosteroids on mortality and intensive care unit admission in patients with COVID-19 according to patients' oxygen requirements

Cecilia Tortajada, Enrique Colomer, Juan C. Andreu-Ballester, Ana Esparcia, Carmina Oltra, Juan Flores

Summary: Corticosteroids have shown to reduce mortality and ICU admission frequency in COVID-19 patients requiring high-flow oxygen or NIV, but not in those requiring low-flow oxygen. Better patient selection is needed for the beneficial use of corticosteroids in COVID-19 treatment.
