Bowel ischemia as onset of COVID-19 in otherwise asymptomatic patients with persistently negative swab

Paolo Zamboni, Daria Bortolotti, Savino Occhionorelli, Luca Traina, Luca Maria Neri, Roberta Rizzo, Roberta Gafa, Angelina Passaro

Summary: This study identified three asymptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection who had the virus present in resected specimens from acute bowel ischemia. Despite lacking respiratory or constitutional symptoms, these patients tested strongly positive for SARS-CoV-2 in their resected tissues, suggesting a potential unique presentation of the virus in acute abdominal distress.

Non-parametric local capability indices for industrial planar manufacts: An application to the etching phase in the microelectronic industry

Riccardo Borgoni, Vincenzo Emanuele Farace, Diego Zappa

Summary: Process capability indices are often used to estimate the mean-variability performance of industrial products. This article proposes an approach based on additive quantile models to estimate the Cpk specification locally in a Bayesian paradigm. The method is demonstrated in the etching phase of the integrated circuit fabrication process. Furthermore, two resampling-based algorithms are proposed for local capability analysis at the lot level.

Inhibitory KIR2DL2 receptor and HHV-8 in classic or endemic Kaposi sarcoma

Daria Bortolotti, Monica Corazza, Antonella Rotola, Dario Bencivelli, Giovanna Schiuma, Elisabetta Danese, Sabrina Rizzo, Silvia Beltrami, Roberta Rizzo, Alessandro Borghi

Summary: The results of the study suggest that KIR2DL2 and HHV8 infection may be associated with the development of classical KS, and may act as a co-factor in increasing the risk of developing c-KS in HHV8-positive, immunocompetent individuals. However, the role of KIR2DL2 seems to be less relevant in the pathogenesis of endemic KS.

COVID-19 induced aorto duodenal fistula following evar in the so called negative patient

Luca Traina, Marianna Mucignat, Roberta Rizzo, Roberta Gafa, Daria Bortolotti, Angelina Passaro, Paolo Zamboni

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed challenges for the international healthcare system and patient treatment and survival. This article presents a case of a so called Covid-19 negative patient who exhibited an unsuspected vascular clinical onset of the viral infection.

Multivariate hierarchical analysis of car crashes data considering a spatial network lattice

Andrea Gilardi, Jorge Mateu, Riccardo Borgoni, Robin Lovelace

Summary: This paper demonstrates a network lattice approach for identifying road segments of particular concern and proposes a novel procedure to investigate the presence of MAUP on a network lattice. The results highlight roads that are more prone to collisions in the north-west and south of the city center.

Effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy on CD147, ACE2 and HLA-G expression

Giovanna Schiuma, Silvia Beltrami, Erica Santi, Gennaro Scutiero, Juana Maria Sanz, Chiara Marina Semprini, Sabrina Rizzo, Mercedes Fernandez, Ines Zidi, Roberta Gafa, Angelina Passaro, Pantaleo Greco, Daria Bortolotti, Roberta Rizzo

Summary: Recent studies have shown differential expression of ACE2 and CD147 in pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 placental infection. This study aimed to investigate placental SARSCoV-2 infection and its potential effect on protein expression. The results revealed a higher percentage of SARS-CoV-2 NP positive placental samples in the group positive for SARS-CoV-2 at delivery compared to the negative group.

SARS-CoV-2 viral entry and replication is impaired in Cystic Fibrosis airways due to ACE2 downregulation

Valentino Bezzerri, Valentina Gentili, Martina Api, Alessia Finotti, Chiara Papi, Anna Tamanini, Christian Boni, Elena Baldisseri, Debora Olioso, Martina Duca, Erika Tedesco, Sara Leo, Monica Borgatti, Sonia Volpi, Paolo Pinton, Giulio Cabrini, Roberto Gambari, Francesco Blasi, Giuseppe Lippi, Alessandro Rimessi, Roberta Rizzo, Marco Cipolli

Summary: As an inherited disorder characterized by severe pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis could be considered a comorbidity for coronavirus disease 2019. However, current clinical evidence suggests that cystic fibrosis may actually protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The expression of SARS-CoV-2 receptors in primary airway epithelial cells is regulated by the CFTR channel, and dysfunctional CFTR channels in cystic fibrosis cells result in reduced viral entry and replication.

Characterization of Neochloris oleoabundans under Different Cultivation Modes and First Results on Bioactivity of Its Extracts against HCoV-229E Virus

Costanza Baldisserotto, Valentina Gentili, Roberta Rizzo, Chiara Di Donna, Luna Ardondi, Annalisa Maietti, Simonetta Pancaldi

Summary: Microalgae, specifically Neochloris oleoabundans, cultivated under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions, were found to produce whole aqueous extracts with antiviral properties against HCoV-229E. The extracts contained bioactive compounds such as lipids, exo-polysaccharides, phenolics, proteins, and pigments. The study suggests that the inhibitory effect of the extracts is mainly attributed to the combination of proteins, pigments, and phenolics in autotrophic cultures, and proteins, acidic exo-polysaccharides, and lipids in mixotrophic cultures.

Non-classical HLA class I molecules and their potential role in viral infections

Silvia Beltrami, Sabrina Rizzo, Giovanni Strazzabosco, Valentina Gentili, Andrea Alogna, Marco Narducci, Daria Bortolotti, Giovanna Schiuma, Roberta Rizzo

Summary: Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) are classified into three different classes I, II and III, and play important roles in immune responses, self-tolerance development and pathogen recognition. Nonclassical subtypes (HLA-Ib), such as HLA-E and HLA-G, have tolerogenic functions that are often exploited by viruses to evade the host immune responses. This review summarizes the current data on HLA-G and HLA-E in viral infections and their impact on immune response.

Gestational Viral Infections: Role of Host Immune System

Silvia Beltrami, Sabrina Rizzo, Giovanna Schiuma, Giorgia Speltri, Dario Di Luca, Roberta Rizzo, Daria Bortolotti

Summary: Viral infections during pregnancy can have serious consequences for both the mother and the fetus. Depending on the timing and type of infection, different clinical manifestations can occur. The unique immunological status of pregnancy allows viruses to exploit and evade the maternal immune system. Understanding the interaction between these viruses and the host's immune system is crucial for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This review focuses on the DNA and RNA viruses associated with gestational infections.

Perspectives of Italian Physicians and Patients in the Treatment of Otitis Externa: A Real-Life Study

Matteo Gelardi, Rossana Giancaspro, Massimo Landi, Luigi Santoiemma, Maddalena Balestra, Michele Cassano, Roberta Rizzo

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the patient journey of Italian patients suffering from otitis externa (OE), with a focus on new therapeutic options. The results showed that OE is a common, often relapsing disease with antibiotic resistance becoming a growing problem. New liposomal ozone-based preparations were found to be the most-prescribed treatment.
