Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract that are influenced by environmental factors including nutrition. This article reviews the bidirectional link between nutritional factors and IBD, the dietary deficits observed in IBD patients, and the potential nutritional interventions.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder caused by enteric inflammation in a genetically susceptible host. Diet is widely accepted as an important factor in the pathogenesis of IBD, and various dietary components have been studied for their roles in causing enteric inflammation. Different diets, such as exclusive enteral nutrition, specific carbohydrate diet, and low FODMAPs diet, have also been explored for their effects on IBD patients. This review summarizes the current evidence on the relationship between dietary components and IBD, and provides guidance for dietary modifications in managing IBD.

Summary: Malnutrition is common but often overlooked in IBD patients. Screening for malnutrition is essential in managing IBD patients. While enteral nutrition is preferred, parenteral nutrition should be considered in specific situations. Proper use of PN is critical for preventing complications.

Summary: Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, with a rate of 23% and no significant difference between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. DRM is associated with higher hospitalization rate, more frequent use of systemic steroids, lower levels of hemoglobin, albumin, prealbumin, and higher levels of C-reactive protein. Low BMI, current hospitalization, and hospitalization in the previous month are significantly associated with DRM.

Summary: The study systematically identified ultrasound scoring indices for assessing inflammatory bowel disease activity, with common components including bowel wall thickness, colour Doppler imaging, and bowel wall stratification. The correlation between ultrasound indices and reference standards, as well as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and other properties, varied within certain ranges. However, reliability and responsiveness data were limited, and most studies were rated with unclear or high risk of bias.

Summary: This population-based study compared the risk of hospitalization with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in children with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The findings showed that children with IBD had a significantly higher incidence of CDI during hospitalization compared to children without IBD. Summary: Patients with lower educational attainment are underrepresented in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research. A study conducted in Montreal, Canada, aimed to understand the healthcare perspectives of these patients. The findings highlighted the importance of access to IBD specialists, good care, and supportive staff. The study also identified the challenges of living with IBD, such as physical and emotional symptoms, reduced social engagement, and difficulties with medications. These insights can contribute to the development of equitable healthcare delivery models.
