Summary: The secreted form of 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (sGRP78) has potential in the treatment of colitis. During the resolving phase, sGRP78 levels are reduced but quickly rebound, making it a potential candidate for the treatment of colitis. Administration of sGRP78 improves intestinal symptoms, restores TJ integrity, decreases immune cell infiltration, and impairs production of inflammatory cytokines.

Summary: This study found that polysaccharides from bergamot (BP) can alleviate colitis symptoms by regulating gut microbiota and metabolism. The results showed that BP can promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria, increase the levels of short-chain fatty acids and L-phenylalanine, and reduce inflammation.

Summary: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a bioactive molecule with potential health benefits, but its involvement in intestinal inflammation is debated. This study found that GABA treatment increases susceptibility to colitis in mice and induces an intestinal barrier defect by inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting apoptosis.

Summary: This study investigated the potential anti-inflammatory activities of tobacco alkaloids nicotine and anatabine in a fully humanized UC mouse model. The results showed that nicotine significantly reduced acute colitis symptoms and improved colitis-specific endpoints. Anatabine also demonstrated similar effectiveness, although weaker or not significant. Gene expression analysis provided insights into the possible mechanism by which nicotine attenuated DSS-induced colitis in humanized mice.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the gut virome, primarily composed of bacterial viruses, plays a crucial role in modulating intestinal inflammation and disease. Virus-like particles (VLPs) isolated from ulcerative colitis (UC) patients can alter gut bacterial diversity and enhance the severity of experimental colitis in mice. These findings suggest that the gut virome could be a potential target for therapeutic interventions in inflammatory bowel diseases.

Summary: Arbutin has protective effects in ulcerative colitis, potentially through the regulation of inflammatory factors and the maintenance of intestinal barrier function. Its mechanism of action may be associated with the MAPK/ELK1 pathway.

Summary: This study investigated the protective effects of blackcurrant (BC) on ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice. BC powder relieved symptoms of colitis, reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, regulated the NF-kappa B signaling pathway and gut barrier function related genes, and modulated the gut microbiota composition.

Summary: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can cause various symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. The efficacy of current treatment options is limited, and therefore, natural products like polysaccharides are being studied as potential alternative therapies. This study investigated the effects of a polysaccharide (CPW) extracted from two plants in an experimental model of UC in mice, and found that CPW improved symptoms and protected the intestinal mucosa.

Summary: This study evaluated the anatomical and functional changes in the colon during the development of acute and chronic DSS-induced UC in mice. The results showed that UC caused thickening of the colonic wall, fibrosis, and reduction in tuft cells, leading to abnormal colonic motility. Further studies may focus on stimulating tuft cell hyperplasia to reduce damage caused by UC.
