Summary: HPeV is a common cause of aseptic meningitis in children aged <= 1 year, with symptoms including poor feeding, tachycardia, and lethargy. Patients with HPeV meningitis typically lack CSF pleocytosis, and are less likely to have it compared to EV meningitis cases.

High-Throughput Mutagenesis and Cross-Complementation Experiments Reveal Substrate Preference and Critical Residues of the Capsule Transporters in Streptococcus pneumoniae

Wan-Zhen Chua, Matthias Maiwald, Kean Lee Chew, Raymond Tzer-Pin Lin, Sanduo Zheng, Lok-To Sham

Summary: MOP family transporters, responsible for transporting lipid-linked precursors to support glycoconjugate synthesis, were systematically tested for their ability to translocate noncognate cargo. Subtle changes in the transporter structure can accommodate different cargoes and potentially expand substrate selectivity. By evaluating the interchangeability of these transporters, important residues for substrate specificity and function were identified, with implications for glycoengineering, vaccine development, and antimicrobial discovery.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae detections before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: results of a global survey, 2017 to 2021

Summary: This study investigated the global incidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infections after the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against COVID-19. The results showed a significant reduction in M. pneumoniae detection rates through direct test methods (mainly PCR) after the implementation of NPIs, while the detection rates through indirect test methods (serology) did not decrease. Furthermore, direct detections remained low worldwide regardless of lockdown or school closure periods. Some sites reported a decrease in the detection of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae (MRMp).

Summary: Salmonella Enteritidis is a major foodborne pathogen worldwide. This study investigated the epidemiology of human salmonellosis in Singapore by analyzing 276 S. enteritidis isolates collected from human, food, and farm/slaughterhouse samples. The results showed that the majority of isolates belonged to ST1925 or ST11, with ST11 being more prevalent in extra-intestinal and chicken isolates. Food isolates, particularly those from poultry, exhibited high rates of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. Plasmid analysis revealed common profiles among chicken and human isolates. SNP analysis suggested relatedness between poultry food products and human isolates. This study provides important insights for improved food safety and public health surveillance of S. enteritidis.

The influence of air quality and meteorological variations on influenza A and B virus infections in a paediatric population in Singapore

Annabel Seah, Liat Hui Loo, Natasha Jamali, Matthias Maiwald, Joel Aik

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between air pollution and meteorological variability with paediatric influenza A and B infections in tropical settings. The study found that exposure to sulphur dioxide (SO2) was positively associated with an increased risk of both influenza types. Ambient temperature was associated with a decline in influenza A reports, while rainfall was positively associated with an increase in influenza A reports. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration was positively associated with influenza B reports, and absolute humidity increased the risk of influenza B. Influenza A and B infections displayed dissimilar but predictable within-year seasonal patterns.

Air quality, meteorological variability and pediatric respiratory syncytial virus infections in Singapore

Meng Han Lee, Diyar Mailepessov, Khairunnisa Yahya, Liat Hui Loo, Matthias Maiwald, Joel Aik

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relationships between climatic factors and air quality with RSV infections among children in Singapore. The study found that temperature and humidity were associated with RSV infection risk, while higher levels of air pollutants were associated with lowered infection risk. These findings can help inform mitigation measures to reduce transmission.

Paediatric actinomycosis: A 16-year, single-institution retrospective review of cases

Siu-Jun Chew, Kelly B. B. Low, Chia-Yin Chong, Matthias Maiwald, Koh-Cheng Thoon, Rina Y. L. Ong, Chee-Fu Yung, Jiahui Li, Karen D. Nadua, Kai-Qian Kam, Henry K. K. Tan, Derrick W. Q. Lian, Leon Y. R. Tan, Natalie W. H. Tan

Summary: This retrospective study examined the epidemiology and treatment outcomes of actinomycosis in children in a tertiary paediatric hospital in Singapore from 2004 to 2020. The results showed that actinomycosis was rare but had a high complication rate in paediatric patients. The most common symptoms were fever, facial or neck swelling, and ear pain. Dental infection was identified as the main risk factor. Surgical intervention and appropriate antimicrobial therapy resulted in excellent prognosis.

SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA load dynamics in the nasopharynx of infected children

K. Q. Kam, K. C. Thoon, M. Maiwald, C. Y. Chong, H. Y. Soong, L. H. Loo, N. W. H. Tan, J. Li, K. D. Nadua, C. F. Yung

Summary: This study identified differences in the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 viral load between asymptomatic and symptomatic infected children, with symptomatic children having higher viral loads. The peak viral loads in infected children occurred around day 2 of illness, emphasizing the importance of screening for SARS-CoV-2 in children with epidemiological risk factors.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed laboratory-confirmed viral respiratory tract infections in pediatric hospitalizations in Singapore, finding different and overlapping seasonal trends for respiratory viruses. Testing for respiratory viruses in patients with acute respiratory infections can help target antiviral therapies and appropriate infection control practices.
