Toxicity Mechanisms of Copper Nanoparticles and Copper Surfaces on Bacterial Cells and Viruses

Summary: Copper is a historically used metal to prevent infections and has potential in combating infectious disease outbreaks. Copper nanoparticles and surfaces are common antimicrobial copper-based technologies. The mechanisms explaining their unique antimicrobial properties are not fully understood, but involve membrane rupture, ion accumulation, protein inactivation, and DNA damage. Understanding the toxicity mechanisms of copper nanoparticles and surfaces is important for developing efficient antimicrobial technologies.

Implementation of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing combined with routine infectious disease bedside consultation in clinical practice (RAST-ID): a prospective single-centre study

Size does matter: antibacterial activities and cytotoxic evaluation of polymorphic CuO nanostructures

Summary: Nanostructured materials, specifically copper oxide nanoparticles (NPs), exhibit significant antibacterial activities, with NPs smaller than 10 nm causing more damage to bacterial cell membranes. Gram-positive bacteria are more susceptible to CuO NPs than Gram-negative bacteria, and CuO NPs show no cytotoxicity to human fibroblast cells. This suggests that CuO nanoparticles can have potential clinical and therapeutic applications.

Developing an Integrated Evaluation Model for Physician Comprehensive Workload Tethered to Outpatient Practice: An Empirical Study From China

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive evaluation framework for assessing physician workload in outpatient practice. By integrating objective workload, task-level mental workload, quality of medical services provided, and patient complexity, an integrated evaluation model was developed. The results show that female physicians, physicians from the eastern or western regions of China, and those who work longer hours per week and longer outpatient hours per week are more likely to experience higher workload.

Summary: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy is a promising method for controlling biofilms in periodontal diseases. To overcome challenges such as teeth staining and lack of sufficient oxygen, a novel superhydrophobic film that generates airborne singlet oxygen has been developed. This approach shows effectiveness in disinfecting bacterial biofilms and will be further evaluated in animal models.

Nanomaterials, particularly nanozymes, have shown strong antimicrobial efficacy. The stimuli-responsiveness of nanomaterials enables local and/or targeted delivery to reduce treatment side effects. The versatility of nanomaterials allows for the rational design of smart or autonomous therapeutics.

Summary: Vaccine hesitancy is a global health threat, and the United States experiences significant COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. This study examined the effects of the 5C model on vaccine adoption and intentions, finding lower vaccine intentions and higher 5C barriers in the South Carolina sample compared to the national sample. The study also revealed associations between demographic characteristics (race) and vaccine behavior drivers (confidence and collective responsibility) with vaccine trust and intentions.

Unsaturated or saturated dietary fat-mediated steatosis impairs hepatic regeneration following partial hepatectomy in mice

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the role of saturated or unsaturated high fat diet-mediated steatosis on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy. The results showed that a diet rich in saturated or unsaturated fat resulted in increased NAFLD scores, inflammatory cytokine expression, neutrophil infiltration, macrophage accumulation, apoptosis, and ALT and AST activities. However, the unsaturated fat diet caused lower inflammation and higher regeneration compared to the saturated fat diet.
