Summary: This study proposed a strategy of hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity regulation and showed that using graphite felt as electrodes can significantly increase H2O2 production, 7.3 times, 7.6 times, and 7.7 times higher than the original GF for hydrophilic GF, hydrophobic GF, and Janus GF, respectively. The results demonstrate that currents and stirring rates affect the H2O2 yields.

Summary: This study evaluated the degradation of diclofenac using UV-B and UV-C LEDs alone and in combination with hydrogen peroxide and free chlorine. The UV-LEDs showed positive synergy in advanced oxidation processes, but the overall electricity demand was similar to UV alone due to the energy cost of the oxidants. Different kinetic degradation mechanisms at different wavelengths were proposed, and no significant synergy was found for the dual-wavelength system. The work highlights the potential of using wavelength-specific LEDs in water treatments.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can degrade a wide range of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water. However, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water can impact the effectiveness of AOPs. DOM can inhibit the degradation of TrOCs, but it can also enhance the formation of useful radicals and alter the transformation pathways of contaminants. Further research is needed to understand how DOM can be used to improve oxidative water purification.

Summary: The persistent and low biodegradability of trace organic contaminants reduce their removal effectiveness in conventional wastewater treatments. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been extensively studied for degrading a wide range of TrOCs by producing reactive oxygen species. Factors such as concentration and nature of TrOCs, bulk wastewater characteristics, and dose of chemicals/catalysts used affect the degradation rates by different AOPs.

Summary: This study aims to assess the feasibility of a hybrid ozonation/nanofiltration membrane process to simultaneously oxidize and reject contaminants while reducing membrane fouling. By using an innovative monophasic configuration with pre-ozonated water and H2O2-doped water, the study successfully avoided ozone-enriched gas flow in the membrane cell and achieved high ozone removal yields.

Summary: Two analytical methods were employed to estimate the antioxidant capacity of commercial fruit juices. The electrochemical method measures the scavenging activity of antioxidants towards OH radicals, while the chromatographic method tests the inhibition of OH radical formation. Both methods show similar trends in evaluating the antioxidant capacity of fruit juices.

Summary: This article reviews bifunctional catalysts for heterogeneous electro-Fenton processes. The generation mechanism of oxidizing radicals from oxygen is described, and different types of bifunctional catalysts are compared based on their elemental compositions. Additionally, five other methods beyond electrocatalysts that can improve the performance of heterogeneous electro-Fenton processes are presented.

Summary: UV/Cl and UV/H2O2 are compared in terms of their efficiency in the degradation of contaminants in water, with the hypothesis that UV/Cl becomes more competitive as TOC concentration increases at neutral-to-high pH. The results indicate that UV/Cl shows less decrease in reaction rate coefficients for certain contaminants compared to UV/H2O2 as TOC concentration increases, suggesting that UV/Cl may be more energy-efficient in a wider range of treatment scenarios than previously thought.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of aqueous betrixaban, an oral anticoagulant, during adsorption, photolysis, and advanced oxidation in the presence of radicals. The results showed that betrixaban can be efficiently removed using coconut shell-based granular activated carbon and that degradation rates can be enhanced by increasing H2O2 dosage, light intensity, and contact time. Hydroxyl radicals were identified as the major reactive species involved in the degradation process during the UV/H2O2 treatment.

Summary: By combining managed aquifer recharge (MAR) with pre-oxidation processes, this study effectively reduced selected trace organic contaminants (TrOCs). The pre-oxidation step using potassium permanganate achieved a high removal rate of carbamazepine at 96%. Furthermore, combining MAR with nanofiltration membranes successfully removed persistent TrOCs.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential in electrocatalysis due to their adjustable ligand structures, but their poor stability hinders practical applications. This study introduces an innovative strategy of leveraging metal nodes to enhance both the catalytic activity and stability. The NiRh-MOF||NiRh-MOF configuration in the electrolysis cell achieved a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an ultralow voltage of 0.06 V in alkaline seawater, outperforming the Pt/C||Pt/C benchmark cell (0.12 V). Additionally, the incorporation of Rh into the MOF enabled a robust stability of over 60 hours in seawater electrolyte.
