Summary: This study presents the first investigation on the dwell-fatigue behavior and damage mechanism of as-HIPed Ti-6Al-4V powder compact. The results show that the peak stress and stress ratio have significant effects on dwell fatigue behavior. A crack-initiation and propagation model based on soft-hard grain pairs has been proposed to explain the dwell-fatigue mechanism.

Summary: Mode I and mode I + II fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted using compaction tension shear specimens made of Ti-6Al-4V by additive manufacturing at various loading angles. The performance of different methodologies used to determine the equivalent stress intensity factor was studied. It was found that simpler methods achieved good results when considering the crack deflection angle in the algorithm. The crack growth speed was not significantly affected by the similar values of crack deflection angle, predominance of mode I loading, and similar crack closure effect.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue crack growth rates of Ti-6Al-4V material are influenced by build orientation and post heat treatments, while texture and build orientation have minimal impact on slow crack growth rates and fatigue thresholds. The definition of fatigue thresholds lies in the ability to transfer slip from one α' / α laths to another, with some effect of crack closure induced by roughness. The transition away from microstructure sensitive fatigue crack growth occurred when the packet/colony size equaled the cyclic plastic zone size.

Summary: The fracture surface characteristics and micromechanisms of fish-eye crack initiation in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy under VHCF loading were investigated. The crack initiation area exhibited ragged-like mountains, dimples, and various irregular rods/particles, grooves, and microvoids. These characteristics were primarily attributed to the nucleation and coalescence of microvoids and grooves at the alpha(s)/beta(r) interface inside the beta(trans). The beta(trans) played a dominant role in the fish-eye crack initiation and early propagation process.

Summary: The study on small crack propagation tests conducted on Ti-6Al-4V specimens under varying vacuum pressures showed that crack initiation life increased and crack propagation rate decreased with decreasing vacuum pressure. Fractographic features varied, with angular surfaces in air and under 10(0) Pa, and granular features below 10(-2) Pa. The window periods formed an oxidized surface coverage which influenced the crack propagation rate and fracture surface features. Surface cracks under 10(-4)-10(-6) Pa exhibited characteristics similar to internal cracks, suggesting a high vacuum environment around the internal cracks.

Summary: The initiation of internal fatigue cracks in very high cycle fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated using synchrotron radiation X-ray computed tomography (SR-CT). Micro-CT detected 28 cracks that were distributed across the examined volume of CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER EF1.8 x L 2.5 mm. No apparent correlation was observed between the spatial distribution, initial lengths, and initiation lives of cracks. The crack growth rate of the facet-sized crack varied widely; some cracks propagated rapidly, whereas no crack growth was observed for other cracks over a specific period of time after detection. Using nano-CT, the several grain-sized internal cracks and their microstructures were clearly and nondestructively visualized. In the field of view, many primary alpha phases were detected; however, no other cracks were observed. The multiple facet initiation site, which is commonly observed for titanium alloys, might not be due to the concurrently initiated facets but may be caused by the small crack growth accompanied by facet formation.

Summary: A plane bending fatigue test was conducted on Ti-6Al-4V to identify the crystal grains and slip system responsible for fatigue crack initiation. The study found that fatigue cracks were caused by basal slip. The results showed that the number of crystal grains where fatigue crack may initiate can be limited by considering the grain size and the out-of-plane component of the Schmid factor.

Summary: Accurate fatigue life predictions of titanium alloy components requires an understanding of how the machining affected metallurgical and micro-mechanical subsurface condition influences fatigue crack nucleation and growth. This study investigates the influence of surface integrity features generated during carbide and highspeed polycrystalline diamond machining on the fatigue behaviour of coarse and fine-grained Ti-6Al-4V. Mechanically induced compressive residual stresses, promoted by higher feed rates and the larger cutting edge radii of carbide tools, have been demonstrated to provide an overriding enhancing effect on fatigue life due to crack initiation suppression and reducing the deleterious effects of microstructural deformation and surface imperfections.

Summary: The spall damage of Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was investigated through plate impact in the build direction (BD) and the transverse direction (TD), focusing on its mechanisms and microstructure effects. Comparative analysis was performed on conventionally hot-rolled Ti-6Al-4V alloys processed with annealing and quenching. Results showed that the spall strength and Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) of LPBF-fabricated samples were higher in the TD loading than in the BD loading. The LPBF-fabricated alloy exhibited a lower HEL but similar spall strength compared to conventionally fabricated alloys. The anisotropy in mechanical properties and damage was attributed to columnar prior beta grains, morphological, and crystallographic texture of martensite laths.

Summary: The VHCF properties and damage mechanisms of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy with needle-like beta phase were investigated, revealing that fatigue damage is primarily caused by interior crack initiation with a fish-eye pattern. The formation of this particular appearance is attributed to the nucleation and coalescence of microvoids and grooves occurring in the transformed beta phase (beta(t)), which plays a dominant role in the crack initiation process of Ti-6Al-4V in the VHCF regime.

Summary: A detailed study comparing the microstructural differences between Ti-6Al-4V parts fabricated via conventional powder metallurgy and laser powder bed fusion routes revealed that L-PBF parts have a higher microhardness with a single phase of martensitic alpha '. On the other hand, parts sintered via powder metallurgy showed two phases with lower microhardness. The rapid cooling of the beta phase had no effect on the hardening of the bulk martensitic hcp alpha ' in L-PBF parts.

Summary: Metastable beta Ti alloys based on the Ti-Nb system have attracted attention due to their unique properties. However, the unstable cyclic behavior of these alloys has hindered their widespread industrial use. Recent studies have shown that internal stresses, including those from dislocations, may be responsible for this behavior. This study demonstrates that inter-cycle thermal treatments can mitigate the unstable cyclic behavior, providing a significant breakthrough in our understanding of Ti-Nb superelastic materials.

Summary: This paper systematically investigated the evolution of microstructure in Fe-Ni-Co-Al polycrystalline alloys and its effects on mechanical properties. The results revealed that the migration of grain boundaries in different processes is driven by different factors, which impacts the grain orientation and precipitate formation. In the process of directional recrystallization, grains with specific orientations grow in the grain boundary region and form the dominant orientation, while grains with lower migration rate form the minor orientation. The alloy produced through directional recrystallization exhibited good recoverable strain and superelastic strain, while the alloy produced through solid solution treatment showed no evident superelastic behavior.

Summary: This study employed laser metal deposition to additively manufacture Ti-15Mo wt% alloy, and subsequently subjected it to post-fabrication uniaxial thermomechanical processing. The results showed that different zones in the microstructure remained after processing, and deformation mechanisms mainly involved slip and martensite formation. The compressive mechanical properties were found to be dependent on strain rate, with higher flow stress and compressive strength observed at higher strain rates. Grain structure homogenisation was not achieved, leading to anisotropic tensile properties.

Summary: The mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of C-doped TRIP-assisted HEA under dynamic loading conditions were systematically investigated in this study. The results showed that dynamic tensile deformation led to an increase in yield strength and a decrease in ultimate tensile strength, with a trend towards increased total elongation. The primary deformation mechanisms shifted from TRIP and TWIP effects to deformation twinning and dislocations. The presence of carbides formed through C-doping hindered dislocation slip and promoted the activation of multiple twinning systems.
