Summary: In this article, simplified geometries for microstrip antennas were evaluated and optimized for partial discharge (PD) detection. The performance of the proposed antenna was improved using cascaded frequency selective surfaces (FSS). The insertion of the FSS did not affect the operational bandwidth of the antenna and increased the sensitivity for PD detection within the proposed frequency range. The proposed UHF sensor for PD detection was successfully tested on three different devices.

Summary: This letter presents the design of a new flexible Hilbert antenna for built-in detection of partial discharges (PD) in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The fractal antenna is designed on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material and demonstrates high PD detection sensitivity. It has a broad bandwidth and little effect on antenna bandwidth even with bending deformation.

Summary: Partial discharges are a common and harmful threat to the electrical insulation of high voltage and high field equipment. Continuous monitoring of partial discharges is necessary for preventing damage to electrical power equipment. The ultra-high frequency PD measurement method is widely used, but there is a need for more sensitive sensors to improve accuracy.

Summary: This article presents a novel ring-shaped hybrid fractal antenna for detection of partial discharge (PD) in inverter-fed machines. The proposed antenna shows high sensitivity in the ultrahigh-frequency bandwidth for PD detection and has the ability to discriminate PD signals from other sources of high-frequency disturbances. It is suitable for noninvasive online condition monitoring and PD detection of any inverter-fed electrical machine.

Summary: The medium-frequency (MF) transformer in a phase-shift modulated dc solid-state transformer (SST) is susceptible to partial discharge (PD), which affects system reliability and lifetime. The close proximity and spiral geometry of tightly packed MF transformer windings carrying pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltages create favorable conditions for PD inception. Phase-shift modulation results in a peak potential condition between adjacent posterior conductors of the primary and secondary windings, leading to PD at lower than expected operating voltages. This article investigates the effects of PWM voltages with high dv/dt switching transients on PD and lifetime characteristics of the MF transformer in a dc SST, and presents a nonintrusive PD detection strategy using high-speed optical sensors.

Summary: The polarization sensitivity of an ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) sensor for detecting partial discharge (PD) activity in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) was studied using a tapered planar spiral (TPS) antenna. The TPS antenna was optimized for circular polarization (CP) over the frequency range of 0.5-3.5 GHz. Compared to a linearly polarized (LP) UHF antenna, the TPS antenna showed stronger polarization sensitivity for detecting PDs in the GIS.

Summary: The demand for a high-power and high-density isolated dc-dc converter is increasing due to the rapid development of energy storage system, data center power supplies, and transportation electrification. A scalable electronic-embedded transformer (EET) is proposed to overcome the tradeoff between power rating and operation frequency by integrating a low-voltage bridge into the transformer windings. Additionally, a bidirectional EET-based dc transformer (EET-DCX) is proposed to solve the issues in traditional LLC-DCX designs and has the potential to achieve high performance in the megahertz operation frequency range.
