Six Limnothrix strains, isolated for the first time from a shallow eutrophic lake in central China, were taxonomically and phylogenetically evaluated by investigating their polyphasic characteristics, including morphological features, cellular ultrastructures, and 16S rRNA gene sequences. All the six strains were morphologically similar, and their trichomes were in average 1.7 mu m wide and cells 4.0 mu m long, and having small gas vesicles within cells, and therefore identified as Limnothrix planctonica (Woloszynska) Meffert. Cellular ultrastructures of them showed that peripheral thylakoids with 3-5 parallel layers were parietally distributed in the cells. The phylogenetic results based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that all the Limnothrix strains, including the six in this study and those from the Genbank, formed two distinct clusters. The similarity in 16S rDNA sequences between these two clusters was lower than 90%, indicating that these Limnothrix strains belong to different genera. This is the first report on the morphology and phylogeny of L. planctonica strains, providing the new information on taxonomy of the genus Limnothrix.

Neochroococcus gongqingensis gen. et sp. nov., a new member of coccoid cyanobacteria from a watercourse, Eastern China

Ruozhen Geng, Yilang Wang, Fangfang Cai, Yige Zhang, Ping Yang, Guofei Dai, Renhui Li, Gongliang Yu

Summary: The taxonomy of coccoid cyanobacteria has been revised recently. A novel coccoid cyanobacterial strain CHAB 4018 was isolated from Poyang Lake Model Research Base in Jiangxi province, which was identified as a new genus Neochroococcus gongqingensis. A large phylogenetic tree suggested the phylogenetic intermixture of Chroococcus-like and Eucapsis-like cyanobacteria, indicating the need for further research on their phylogeny and taxonomy.

Four decades of progress in cylindrospermopsin research: The ins and outs of a potent cyanotoxin

Yiming Yang, Gongliang Yu, Youxin Chen, Nannan Jia, Renhui Li

Summary: Cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a toxic metabolite from cyanobacteria with cosmopolitan occurrence, aquatic bioaccumulation, and multi-organ toxicity. It poses a great challenge for public health due to its cytotoxic, genotoxic, immunotoxic, and neurotoxic effects, with major toxicity manifested in the liver. Further research is needed to address current data gaps and identify future directions for CYN research.

Multiple diversity facets of crucial microbial groups in biological soil crusts promote soil multifunctionality

Hua Li, Youxin Chen, Gongliang Yu, Federico Rossi, Da Huo, Roberto De Philippis, Xiaoli Cheng, Weibo Wang, Renhui Li

Summary: This study in drylands disentangled the linkages of effects of diversity within functional groups and found that richness and phylogenetic dissimilarity were significant factors influencing soil multifunctionality. Evaluating functional significance at the species level provided important clues on the trade-offs and redundancy within each functional group, explaining the distinct patterns of effects of diversity.

Summary: The study in China isolated and identified different Microcystis species, detected mcyB gene-containing strains, and found significant differences between two groups of MC-producing Microcystis. Some strains in one group did not contain MC-RR. Compared with other regions, the proportion of Chinese MC-producing Microcystis differed, with M. aeruginosa being the most likely morphotype worldwide.

Geographic pattern of phytoplankton community and their drivers in lakes of middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River floodplain, China

Zhe Xiao, Hua Li, Xiao-Chuang Li, Ren-Hui Li, Shou-Liang Huo, Gong-Liang Yu

Summary: Disentangling the contributions of deterministic and stochastic processes is crucial for understanding the geographic pattern and assembly mechanism of phytoplankton community. In this study, we investigated phytoplankton community in 81 lakes in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. We found that both deterministic and stochastic processes governed the assembly and biogeography of phytoplankton community. Spatial factors had a stronger influence on the community compared to environmental variables. These findings suggest that stochastic processes play a dominant role in shaping the phytoplankton community in these lakes.

Summary: This study examined the composition and dynamics of zooplankton in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in China. It found significant changes in zooplankton compositions among different months and their correlation with water trophic states. The zooplankton community structure was characterized by low diversity and high evenness. Compared to historical studies, the biomass of zooplankton in the reservoir has increased significantly, while the abundance showed a decreasing trend.
