BACKGROUND: Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is increased in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), suggesting a delay in ovarian aging. We examined AMH levels in PCOS and normo-ovulatory women in a population-based cohort over a period of 10 years and used this information to estimate their menopausal age. METHODS: Of a subset of 1002 non-menopausal women randomly selected from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, 85 cases of PCOS were diagnosed. We frequency-matched our control subjects with PCOS cases based on age and BMI. AMH levels were assessed at the time of recruitment (T1) and twice after that (T2 and T3). AMH levels were then plotted against age of the individual at the time of the measurement and the most appropriate model was selected. Menopause was calculated based on AMH levels below 0.2 ng/ml. RESULTS: AMH levels were significantly higher in PCOS cases compared with controls at the beginning of the study (5.58 +/- 3.64 versus 4.35 +/- 2.90 ng/ml, P = 0.03), but the difference diminished considerably in subsequent assessments. The rate of AMH decline in PCOS cases decreased in the second compared with the first interval; however, no apparent change in the rate of decline was observed in controls. Estimated ages at menopause were 51 [95% confidence interval (Cl), 34-81] and 49 (95% Cl, 38-63) years in PCOS cases and controls, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The reproductive lifespan of PCOS women extends on average 2 years beyond that of normo-ovulatory women.

Long-term high-fat diet disrupts lipid metabolism and causes inflammation in adult male rats: possible intervention of endoplasmic reticulum stress

Fateme Binayi, Mehdi Moslemi, Fariba Khodagholi, Mehdi Hedayati, Homeira Zardooz

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term high-fat diet on plasma lipid profile and inflammation probability in adult rats. The results showed that high-fat diet increased body weight, food intake, intra-abdominal fat, and plasma leptin level. Additionally, it increased plasma concentrations of triglycerides, LDL, cholesterol, and IL 1-beta, while decreasing HDL level. Injection of an ER stress inhibitor reversed these changes. It suggests that long-term high-fat diet can disrupt lipid metabolism and induce inflammation through ER stress.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary diabetes risk reduction score (DDRRS) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in an Iranian adult population. The findings suggest that adherence to a dietary pattern with a higher score of DDRRS may be associated with a lower risk of CKD incident.

Summary: This study examined the association between age, period, and birth cohort with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) changes in participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study from 1999 to 2015. The results showed that BMI and WC increased with age in both men and women, and younger men from recent birth cohorts and older women from earlier birth cohorts had the most concerning BMI and WC trends. These findings highlight the importance of implementing obesity prevention policies, especially targeting younger men.

Investigating the Effects of Maternal Separation on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis and Glucose Homeostasis under Chronic Social Defeat Stress in Young Adult Male Rat Offspring

Summary: This study aimed to explore the communication between glucose metabolism and HPA axis dysregulations under chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) in the context of maternal separation (MS). The study found that MS exacerbated HPA axis overactivity and endocrine pancreas dysfunctions under CSDS, which may be related to increased corticosterone secretion and decreased content of specific receptor protein in the pancreas.

Summary: There is no high-certainty evidence that diets alone improve health or reproductive outcomes in women with PCOS. However, supplementation with vitamin D, probiotics/synbiotics, omega-3, inositol, and curcumin has favorable effects on some metabolic outcomes.

Idiopathic hirsutism and dyslipidemia: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regressions

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the lipid profiles in women with idiopathic hirsutism (IH) compared to those of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and healthy controls. The meta-analysis results showed that the levels of total cholesterol were slightly higher and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were slightly lower in women with IH compared to healthy controls. There were no significant differences in the levels of triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol between the study groups. The levels of lipid profiles were also not significantly different between women with IH and PCOS patients, except for triglyceride levels.

Comprehensive review of resveratrol as a feed additive in dairy cows: exploring its potential diverse effects and implications

M. R. Rezaei Ahvanooei, M. A. Norouzian, M. Hedayati, M. H. Ghaffari

Summary: Heat stress and growing demand for dairy products in tropical regions can cause metabolic diseases and economic losses in dairy cows. However, the use of resveratrol (RSV) can help prevent these problems by providing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and antimicrobial effects. RSV also improves reproductive performance and reduces methane emissions. It is important to note that the dosage of RSV is crucial, as high doses can have adverse effects. Overall, RSV polyphenol at optimal doses shows promise for preventing and treating metabolic abnormalities in dairy cows.
