Summary: This study found that patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) have an increased risk of major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These findings highlight the importance of closely monitoring the mental health of individuals with T1DM and conducting further research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of comorbidities between T1DM and major psychiatric disorders.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that patients with bipolar disorder, as well as their unaffected siblings, have a higher risk of developing malignant cancer compared to the general population. This risk is more pronounced in patients under the age of 50.

Summary: This nationwide population-based study examines the risk of major psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study finds that FDRs of individuals with ASD have a higher risk of ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and ASD compared to controls. FDRs of individuals with ASD and intellectual disability (ASD-ID) have an even higher risk for schizophrenia and ASD. The findings suggest shared etiologic pathways among ASD, ID, and major psychiatric disorders and highlight the importance of early diagnosis and interventions in at-risk families.

Summary: This nationwide population-based longitudinal register linkage study aimed to investigate the long-term response to lithium in patients with bipolar disorder with and without comorbid epilepsy. The study also aimed to compare differences in responses between lithium, valproate, and lamotrigine within patients with comorbid bipolar disorder and epilepsy. The findings suggest that valproate and lamotrigine should be given priority in these patients.

Summary: This study provides insights into the common reasons and baseline characteristics of emergency department visits of patients with bipolar disorder in the United States. Mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, and anxiety disorders were found to be the most common specific psychiatric reasons for emergency department visits among patients with bipolar disorder.

Summary: Due to the need for early identification of bipolar spectrum disorders, the newly developed Mood Disorder Assessment Schedule (MDAS) was tested in a sample of 396 inpatient adolescents. The MDAS showed stronger clinical utility than the standard diagnostic interview in identifying individuals at risk for bipolar spectrum disorders. This promising diagnostic tool may facilitate earlier diagnosis and prevent harmful effects of improper treatment.

Summary: Few studies have investigated the parental risk of major psychiatric disorders among patients with comorbid autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This study found that the parents of patients with autism spectrum disorder-only had a different incidence of major psychiatric disorders compared to the parents of patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-only and dual-diagnosis.

Summary: Genetically isolated populations with reduced genetic variation due to recent bottleneck events have increased risk for recessive disorders. This study compared reproductive outcomes between Amish couples who were carriers and noncarriers of pathogenic variants, and found that carrier couples had fewer miscarriages. Additionally, higher overall relatedness between spouses was associated with higher number of live births, pregnancies, and stillbirths.
