Summary: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) are underserved populations who face various health disparities, including cancer. Limited access to diagnostic radiology and lack of awareness contribute to the high mortality rates of breast, liver, and lung cancers in this population. Improving patient and physician access to medical imaging can enable early detection and improve healthcare outcomes. Increased awareness and outreach efforts are needed to address the cancer disparities among this specific ethnic group.

Summary: This study found that HLA-DRB1*10, DRB1*10-DQB1*05, and HLA-DRB1*15-DQB1*03 alleles may influence the susceptibility to NMO among South Indians, while the DRB1*14 allele and DRB1*14-DQB1*05 haplotype showed a protective role against NMO.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between social support and type 2 diabetes management among older American Indian people. The findings revealed that family, clinicians/formal services, community/culture, and spiritual/God were the main sources of social support, with men receiving more instrumental support from family and friends compared to women. These findings contribute to a better understanding of how social relationships can be utilized to improve diabetes management among older American Indian people.

Summary: Research shows persistent perceptions of healthcare insecurity among American Indian elders, focusing on interactions with healthcare providers, health insurance calculations, and national health policy dynamics. This healthcare insecurity presents a major barrier to wellbeing for this population, which is not effectively addressed by current health policy interventions.

Summary: A study on Sudanese HLA found that Nubians in Sudan are genetically related to Sub-Saharan populations in Africa, while other Sudanese tribes are closer to Mediterranean populations. This suggests the existence of prehistoric genetic and peoples exchange between Africa and the Mediterranean basin.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of American Indian (AI) cancer survivors, caregivers, tribal leaders, and healers on spirituality during the cancer journey. The findings revealed four major themes related to spirituality: the impact of colonization, the coexistence of traditional and Christian religions, calling the spirit back, and the sacred energy of prayer.

Summary: This study analyzed the role of genetic factors in the development of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) in Bulgaria. The results revealed certain HLA alleles that are associated with susceptibility to PV, as well as alleles that are protective against autoimmune diseases. These findings help explain the higher incidence and clinical variability of the disease in certain populations.

Summary: This study examines the association between mid-life physical activity and late-life cognitive performance in American Indians. The results show that higher levels of physical activity in mid-life are positively correlated with better cognitive function in late-life, but the clinical significance is limited and dependent on the level of physical activity.

Summary: Informal caregiving can have negative impacts on the mental and physical health of caregivers, and American Indians and Alaska Natives face unique challenges in this regard. Further research and support are needed for this population.

Summary: This study investigated the association between lung disease and DNA methylation, finding multiple differentially methylated CpG sites associated with chronic lung disease. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in lung disease and may have diagnostic implications.

Summary: The prevalence of methamphetamine use is higher among American Indian and Alaska Native communities compared to the general U.S. population, particularly in rural areas and among those with low income. Those who use methamphetamine are more likely to be male, middle-aged, low income, have severe mental illness, and misuse other substances than those who do not use methamphetamine.

Summary: American Indian and Alaska Native patients with prostate cancer experience disparities in terms of advanced stage at diagnosis, lower rates of definitive treatment, and higher mortality. However, after adjusting for various factors, such as patient characteristics, county-level demographics, and provider density, the disparities in prostate cancer-specific mortality between American Indian and Alaska Native patients and White patients were no longer significant.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of allelic variation and haplotypes in genes conferring PHS resistance in winter wheat cultivars by testing PHS resistance in 326 commercial cultivars over three growing seasons. The results identified useful alleles and haplotypes for improving PHS resistance and highlighted the potential of introgressing specific alleles to enhance resistance. This research provides valuable information for breeding programs aiming at enhancing PHS resistance in winter wheat cultivars.

Summary: Research revealed that permissive HLA-DPB1 mismatches in hematopoietic cell transplantation have higher peptide repertoire overlaps and lower frequency and diversity of alloreactive TCR beta clonotypes in healthy individuals and transplanted patients compared to nonpermissive mismatches. The permissiveness can be reversed by peptide editor HLA-DM or its antagonist, HLA-DO, through significant broadening of the peptide repertoire. This highlights the key role of HLA-DM in harnessing T-cell alloreactivity to HLA-DP, making it a potential novel target for cellular and immunotherapy of leukemia.

Summary: In the context of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, CMV replication kinetics were found to be associated with distinct immune reconstitution patterns and relevant clinical outcomes. High CMV peak titers were linked to reduced overall survival and higher NRM risk, while intermediate CMV peak titers were associated with a decreased probability of leukemia relapse.

Summary: The study genotyped 548 individuals from eastern Paraguay for three marker sets, finding genetic homogeneity between departments and a sex-biased intermarriage with higher maternal than paternal Native American ancestry. Within the native mtDNA lineages in Paraguay, most haplogroups have a broad distribution across the subcontinent, while the European paternal lineages in Paraguay showed a major contribution from the Iberian region. The joint analysis of different types of markers revealed the impact of post-war migrations on the current genetic background of Paraguay, in addition to the remaining legacy of the colonial period.
