Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that regulate airway remodeling and may contribute to the development of emphysema in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This literature review examines the role of different MMPs in COPD, their regulation by tissue inhibitors, and the potential therapeutic targeting of MMPs in COPD. Recent clinical trials supporting this approach are also discussed.

Summary: The importance of early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and its cutaneous complications is increasingly recognized. High glucose affects collagen gene expression in human dermal fibroblasts, leading to an imbalance of matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases. Inhibiting MMP-2 and MMP-9 can alleviate collagen deposition disorder in the skin of diabetic mice.

Summary: The content of trace elements in medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is related to its related biomarkers, especially zinc (Zn), which is correlated with the proportion and intensity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (TIMPs).

Summary: CoQ10 supplementation significantly decreased levels of inflammatory biomarkers and MMPs in patients with breast cancer, suggesting a potential benefit in breast cancer treatment. Further controlled trials in other types of cancer are needed to confirm the effects of CoQ10 on tumor therapy.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of TIMPs and associated MMPs in different stages and grades of serous ovarian tumors, as well as their response to chemotherapy treatment. The results showed that TIMPs and MMPs are differentially expressed in ovarian tumors and are associated with cancer stem cells.

Summary: Researchers are currently focusing on developing more selective MMP inhibitors by targeting other domains of MMPs through specific small molecule inhibitors or monoclonal antibodies. In addition, they are exploring unbiased global approaches, such as proteomics and N-terminomics, to discover new MMP substrates.

Summary: Obesity is a growing problem, affecting two-thirds of adults and increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Chronic obesity can also lead to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Excessive collagen deposition in the extracellular matrix during obesity can stiffen the myocardium and impair heart function. This review discusses the rationale and potential factors behind this process.

Summary: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common global cancer derived from polyps, with Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) playing a critical role in its initiation and progression. The expression of various MMPs in CRC patients is associated with a poor prognosis, and although research has explored MMP inhibition and targeted therapy for CRC, there is still insufficient understanding of the role of MMPs in polyp malignancy.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of circulating MMPs and TIMPs in TBL individuals with and without helminth coinfection, revealing that MMPs and TIMPs were elevated in TBL-Hel+ coinfected individuals. Regression analysis showed that these changes were independent of age, sex, and culture status. The MMP-2 ratio with all TIMPs was significantly associated with TBL-helminth coinfection, indicating a profound effect of helminth infection on TBL pathogenesis and immunity.

Summary: This study analyzed the serum levels of MMP-9, TIMP-1, and MMP-2/TIMP-2 during normal pregnancy. It was found that MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels remained stable throughout pregnancy, while there was a slight increase in MMP-2/TIMP-2 complex after week 15 with no statistical significance.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of MMPs 2 and 9, TIMPs, S100 protein, and amyloid in the diagnosis of MTC. The results showed a direct correlation between MMPs 2 and 9 and traditional biomarkers of MTC. Therefore, combining the analysis of MMPs 2 and 9 with traditional biomarkers could be a useful strategy in the diagnosis of MTC.

Summary: This review article discusses the roles of Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in dental and periodontal tissues, as well as their potential as biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment. The article provides insights into the involvement of MMPs in development, remodeling, degradation, and turnover of dental and periodontal tissues, and their signals in the pathogenesis and wound healing. The review identified 119 published papers, two textbooks, and two doctoral theses as the basis for the discussion. MMPs are seen as significant proteases with potential diagnostic and prognostic value. Understanding their role in dental and periodontal lesions and dentine-pulp wound healing is crucial for future diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
