Background: Previous research suggests that ADHD patients are characterized by both reduced activity in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) during response inhibition tasks (such as the Go-NoGo task), and reduced activity in the ventral striatum during reward anticipation tasks (such as the Monetary-Incentive-Delay [MID] task). However, no prior research has applied either of these paradigms in medication-naive adults with ADHD, nor have these been implemented in an intrasubject manner. Methods: The sample consisted of 19 medication-naive adults with ADHD and 19 control subjects. Main group analyses were based on individually defined regions of interest: the IFG and the VStr for the Go-NoGo and the MID task respectively. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between the two measures, as well as between these measures and the clinical symptoms of ADHD. Results: We observed reduced bilateral VStr activity in adults with ADHD during reward anticipation. No differences were detected in IFG activation on the Go-NoGo paradigm. Correlation analyses suggest that the two tasks are independent at a neural level, but are related behaviorally in terms of the variability of the performance reaction time. Activity in the bilateral VStr but not in the IFG was associated negatively with symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity. Conclusions: Results underline the implication of the reward system in ADHD adult pathophysiology and suggest that frontal abnormalities during response inhibition performance may not be such a pivotal aspect of the phenotype in adulthood. In addition, our findings point toward response variability as a core feature of the disorder. Hum Brain Mapp 33:23502361, 2012. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Cristina Varo, Silvia Amoretti, Giulio Sparacino, Esther Jimenez, Brisa Sole, Caterina del Mar Bonnin, Laura Montejo, Maria Serra, Carla Torrent, Estela Salagre, Antoni Benabarre, Pilar Salgado-Pineda, Irene Montoro Salvatierra, Pilar A. Summary: This study found that emotional intelligence is preserved in patients after a first episode mania, but deficits can be observed in patients with chronic bipolar disorder. The severity of the illness and neurocognitive decline may contribute to impairments in emotional intelligence.

Decreased activation of parvalbumin interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex in intact inbred Roman rats with schizophrenia-like reduced sensorimotor gating

Carles Tapias-Espinosa, Ana Sanchez-Gonzalez, Toni Canete, Daniel Sampedro-Viana, Maria del Mar Castillo-Ruiz, Ignasi Oliveras, Adolf Tobena, Susana Aznar, Alberto Fernandez-Teruel

Summary: This study found that PPI differences in Roman rats were associated with divergences in mPFC activity, and reduced activation of PV interneurons was observed in the Roman high-avoidance (RHA) rats with low PPI. Additionally, RHA rats exhibited decreased density of both PV interneurons and PSD-95 puncta on active PV interneurons. These findings suggest that reduced cortical inhibition may contribute to the schizophrenia-like features observed in RHA rats, supporting the role of impaired cortical inhibition in schizophrenia.

Identifying pathways between psychiatric symptoms and psychosocial functioning in the general population

Francisco Diego Rabelo-da-Ponte, Norma Verdolini, Jeferson Ferraz Goularte, Silvia Dubou Serafim, Marco Antonio Knob Caldieraro, Eduard Vieta, Antoni Ramos-Quiroga, Silvia Amoretti, Adriane R. Rosa

Summary: The study aims to identify pathways between psychiatric network symptoms and psychosocial functioning. The results suggest that individuals with psychological distress are more likely to experience poor functional status, highlighting the need for comprehensive psychiatric assessment and mental health care in this subgroup.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate psychopathology, family stress, and coping strategies in families of pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients compared to families of healthy children and adolescents. The results showed that families of SOT recipients exhibited higher levels of anxiety, stress related to childcare and parent-child interaction, and used more avoidance and religious coping strategies, while using fewer social support coping strategies. The study highlights the importance of providing psychological interventions and support for caregivers of SOT patients.

Immunoregulatory and/or Anti-inflammatory Agents for the Management of Core and Associated Symptoms in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Narrative Review of Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trials

Gara Arteaga-Henriquez, Laura Gisbert, Josep Antoni Ramos-Quiroga

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with unclear pathogenesis and limited effective therapies. There is evidence suggesting an association between ASD and immune/inflammatory processes, providing a potential pathway for new drug interventions. This review summarizes the latest evidence on the use of immunoregulatory and/or anti-inflammatory agents for managing ASD.

Discrimination of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adolescents: Spanish version of the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children-11 Self-Report (BPFSC-11) Preliminary results

Natalia Calvo, Jorge Lugo Marin, Raquel Vidal, Carla Sharp, Juan D. Duque, Josep-Antoni Ramos-Quiroga, Marc Ferrer

Summary: This study examines the capacity of the self-report Borderline Personality Features Scale Children-11 (BPFSC-11) to discriminate between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adolescents. The results show that the total BPFSC-11 score has good discriminant capacity among adolescents diagnosed with BPD, ADHD, and healthy volunteers. However, different patterns of discriminative capacity were observed between the three groups for emotional dysregulation and impulsivity/recklessness factors.

Summary: An observational cohort study was conducted to investigate the impact of antenatal anxiety on fetal growth. The study included 204 women with singleton pregnancies during the strict lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Various factors, such as psychosocial factors, maternal demographics, obstetric outcomes, social support, and symptoms of anxiety and depression, were examined as potential predictors of low birth weight. The results showed that trait anxiety was negatively correlated with birth weight percentile.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in scientific interest in the neurobiological processes associated with pregnancy and maternity. A specific pattern of neuroanatomical changes during labor for first-time mothers have been observed, which are associated with maternal behavior. This review focuses on the interplay between pregnancy-related hormones, brain plasticity, and maternal behavior, aiming to provide a roadmap for future investigations.

The association between type 2 diabetes and attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and population-based sibling study

Summary: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the association between ADHD and T2D. Our findings suggest that individuals with ADHD have a significantly increased risk of developing T2D, and this association can be largely explained by psychiatric comorbidities. Early identification and treatment of ADHD comorbidities may be crucial in reducing the risk of T2D in individuals with ADHD.

Summary: This study identified differential characteristics between patients with and without Hoarding Disorder (HD) diagnosis in a clinical sample of patients with clinically relevant hoarding behavior. Hoarding behavior is often overlooked in its early stages and hoarding-related complications are common. Alcohol use disorder may play a significant role among patients without HD diagnosis.
