Summary: In this study, the UV-induced transformation of monochloro-p-benzoquinone (MCBQ) in aqueous solution was systematically investigated through quantum chemical calculations. It was found that the nucleophilic attack of OH- on carbon atoms was the central reaction, and the addition to olefinic carbon atoms was more feasible. Moreover, OH- preferred to add to the ortho-position of C-Cl bond.

Summary: Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the degradation kinetics and pathways of the neonicotinoid pesticide Flupyradifurone (FPO) in water. The results showed that FPO was fairly stable under natural conditions but rapidly degraded under UV light. Direct photolysis was identified as the main degradation pathway. The study also proposed a plausible photolysis pathway based on the identified photoproducts.

Summary: Nitrate (NO3-) photolysis can generate various nitrogenous products, and the involvement of CaO can selectively reduce NO3- to nitrite (NO2-). The CaO/UV/NO3- system achieves nearly 100% NO2- selectivity under suitable conditions. The high selectivity is attributed to the basic sites and paramagnetic surface species of CaO, which capture nitrogen oxides (NOX) and promote their conversion to NO2-. The two-step reduction strategy of CaO/UV coupled with H2NSO3H is effective for removing NO3- in wastewater, leading to high removal rates and N-2 selectivity.

Summary: This study investigated the photodegradation of targeted glucocorticoids (GCs), budesonide (BD) and clobetasol propionate (CP), and their effects on the environment. The degradation rate constants (k) increased with the initial concentrations of BD and CP. The addition of Cl-, NO2-, and Fe3+ decreased the photodegradation rate, while FA increased it. This research provides insight into the fate of synthetic GCs in the environment and contributes to understanding their ecological risks.

Summary: In this study, the adsorptive removal of p-benzoquinone by a biosolid-based activated carbon was investigated, and it was found that the adsorption rate was rapid and the maximum adsorption capacity was high. The biosolid-based activated carbon could effectively lower the residual p-benzoquinone to below the fish-toxicity limit within 1 hour. Therefore, it is a promising method for the removal of p-benzoquinone from aqueous environments.

Summary: In this study, nano zero-valent iron-manganese (NZVIM) bimetallic materials were synthesized and used to activate sulfite for the elimination of sulfamethazine (SMT). The optimum Fe/Mn molar ratio was found to be different under different pH conditions. The addition of manganese element improved the degradation efficiency of SMT. The primary radicals responsible for SMT elimination were identified to be ·OH.

Summary: This study proposes a UV/sulfite advanced reduction method for removing arsenic (As(V) and As(III)) from water. The results show that this method can effectively remove over 99.9% of arsenic and avoid the generation of hazardous waste. The reduction of arsenic is favorable under alkaline conditions, while the presence of dissolved oxygen and some other substances inhibits the reduction process.

Summary: The study investigated the photochemistry and fluorescence properties of the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen in sodium dodecyl sulfate micellar solutions, showing that most of naproxen is localized in the micellar phase. The presence of naproxen in the micellar environment resulted in changes in its fluorescence and photodegradation behaviors. The study also observed different decay kinetics of photochemical intermediates in micellar solution compared to homogeneous media.

Summary: The adsorption characteristics of palladium from chloride aqueous solution onto the silica alginate (SA-Si) nanomaterial have been studied. The experiment showed that the pseudo-first-order model provided the best fitting for the adsorption of palladium ions, with an equilibrium time of 90.0 min. The Langmuir isotherm model was able to describe the adsorption isotherm result well, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 12.50 mg/g for Pd(II) on the SA-Si nanomaterial. Thermodynamic results indicated that the sorption of Pd(II) onto the SA-Si nanomaterial was endothermic and spontaneous. Additionally, the SA-Si nanomaterial showed effective adsorption for Pd(II) from various metal ions present in fission products.

Summary: The widespread occurrence and persistence of pharmaceuticals in the environment have raised concerns due to their incomplete removal by conventional wastewater treatment methods. Radiation technology has been proven to be an effective alternative, as highly reactive species lead to high levels of pharmaceutical degradation. This study focuses on the gamma-radiolytic degradation of rosuvastatin (ROSU) under different conditions, particularly in air where the dominant reaction is expected to be with center dot OH radicals. The reaction rate constant between ROSU and center dot OH radicals was determined to be 2.15 +/- 0.07 x 1010 M-1 s-1 using laser flash photolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism and identified radiolytic products of ROSU degradation were determined through combined gamma-radiolysis and mass spectrometry analysis.

Summary: The research focuses on the reaction of vindoline with a selection of electrophiles to generate various adducts, with conditions optimized to produce different types of adducts. Among the bis-adducts, there are three unseparable species and a high energy barrier between them, making interconversion difficult. These molecules exhibit a back-and-forth conrotatory motion, known as the windshield wiper effect, on the NMR chemical shift time scale.
