Performance of the Pooled Cohort Equations in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients and found that the PCE performed poorly in cardiovascular risk assessment in NAFLD, particularly in women and individuals with moderate-to-severe steatosis. Therefore, primary prevention may need to be considered at a lower risk threshold in these patients.

Low Skeletal Muscle Mass Is a Risk Factor for Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Patients with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Summary: The study found that about 11% of NAFLD patients have low skeletal muscle mass. Multivariate analyses showed that LSMM is significantly associated with increased cIMT and the presence of carotid plaques. The proportion of obese NAFLD patients with LSMM having increased cIMT and carotid plaques was significantly higher compared to those without LSMM.

Diagnosis and management of extrahepatic manifestations of NAFLD, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnea, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, and extrahepatic malignancy are crucial for the treatment of patients with NAFLD.

Tea in cardiovascular health and disease: a critical appraisal of the evidence

Summary: Tea and its bioactive components, particularly polyphenols such as flavonoids, have been suggested to have a protective role in cardiovascular health. While preclinical experiments have shown promising results, human studies have demonstrated modest and less satisfactory effects. However, even small beneficial effects in humans, considering the widespread consumption of tea, may have major implications for public health. Currently, there is insufficient robust evidence to recommend an optimal level of tea consumption for preventing hypertension and improving cardiovascular health.

Insight into the Inter-Organ Crosstalk and Prognostic Role of Liver-Derived MicroRNAs in Metabolic Disease Progression

Summary: Dysfunctional hepatic metabolism is associated with various diseases, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which can progress to hepatic fibrosis and is closely related to insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases. The liver secretes metabolites, biomolecules, and microRNAs (miRNAs) that affect metabolic processes in both the liver and peripheral tissues. This review summarizes the involvement of liver-derived miRNAs in biological processes and explores their communication with other tissues in the progression of metabolic diseases. Moreover, it identifies the main molecular targets of miRNAs, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms of metabolic diseases and suggesting the potential use of circulatory miRNAs as prognostic predictors and therapeutic targets.

Summary: For naive individuals, low IgG titers are relatively long-lasting. Only a third of naive subjects maintain neutralizing responses. After specific stimulation, a very limited number of naive were unable to produce IFN-gamma. The results of breakthrough infections suggest that simultaneous neutralizing antibody titers < 20, binding antibody levels/ml < 200, and IFN-gamma < 1,000 mIU/ml in subjects older than 58 may identify at-risk groups.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between changes in meat consumption and the incidence and remission of NAFLD and significant liver fibrosis. The results showed that high consumption of red and/or processed meat was associated with an increased risk of NAFLD and liver fibrosis. Consistently high meat consumption was also associated with a higher likelihood of new onset and/or persistence of NAFLD.

Dietary Fats and Depressive Symptoms in Italian Adults

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the intake of different types of dietary fats and depressive symptoms in Italian individuals living in the Mediterranean area. The results showed a negative association between moderate intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and depressive symptoms, while moderate intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Moreover, individuals with lower to moderate intake of short-chain and medium-chain saturated fatty acids had a lower risk of depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between different fat types.

The study finds that SOF/VEL patients are older and have more comorbidities and polypharmacy compared to GLE/PIB patients. The simultaneous use of multiple medications can lead to DDIs and increase treatment risks.

Dietary Fats and Cognitive Status in Italian Middle-Old Adults

Summary: The increase in life expectancy has led to a higher prevalence of age-related neurological diseases, such as cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to examine the association between specific categories and subcategories of dietary fats and cognitive status in older Italian adults. The results showed that moderate consumption of certain types of saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment, while moderate intake of linoleic acid was associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment.

Mediterranean diet and chronotype: Data from Italian adults and systematic review of observational studies

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests a relation between dietary factors and sleep, specifically higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with better sleep quality. This study found that individuals with intermediate and evening chronotypes were less likely to adhere to the Mediterranean diet compared to morning chronotype. However, this association was weakened in older participants.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the characteristics and clinical features of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected people who use drugs (PWUDs) in Italy, with a focus on comorbidity profile, treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs), and resource consumption. The study found that HCV-positive individuals were older, had more comorbidities, and had higher rates of drug prescriptions and hospitalizations. Untreated patients with DAAs had more severe comorbidities. These findings provide insights for improving healthcare interventions for HCV-infected PWUDs.

Anthocyanin Effects on Vascular and Endothelial Health: Evidence from Clinical Trials and Role of Gut Microbiota Metabolites

Summary: Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are major global causes of death, and increased oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with endothelial dysfunction. Anthocyanins, with their antioxidant and cardioprotective effects, have garnered significant interest, but their detection in blood serum is limited due to metabolism by gut microbiota. This review summarizes the main findings from clinical studies on the cardioprotective effects of anthocyanins, as well as the role of gut microbiota in their metabolism, bioavailability, and impact on microbiota composition. Further research is needed to clarify which molecules and doses of anthocyanins offer vascular benefits, while considering the crucial role of the microbiota.
