Two new lignans, kadsurindutins C and H (1 and 2, resp.), and a new 18(13 -> 12)-abeo-lanostane triterpenoid acid, kadindutic acid (3). were isolated from the stems of Kadsura induta. together with known lignans and triterpenoids. Their structures and configuarations were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including, 2D-NMR techniques

Yan Wang, Ming-Hui Shao, Si-Wen Yuan, Yan Lu, Qi Wang

Summary: A new monoterpene glycoside, pedivertoside D (1), along with 13 known compounds, were isolated from the whole plant of Pedicularis verticillata L. The new compound was identified as (2E,6E,5R)-5,8-dihydrooxy-2,6-dimethyl-3,7-octadienyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. Compounds 6 and 9 showed anti-complementary effects and may be potential candidates for developing potent anti-complementary agents from this plant.

Oral subacute nephrotoxicity of aristololactam I in rats

Changyue Wang, Yunyi Zhang, Daofeng Chen, Hongbo Weng, Hong Li, Yan Lu

Summary: This study evaluated the nephrotoxicity of aristolactam I (AL I), a metabolite of aristolochic acids (AAs). The results showed that oral administration of AL I caused renal damage, especially after long-term exposure. However, AL I was less nephrotoxic than aristolochic acid.

Ultrafiltration isolation, structure and effects on H1N1-induced acute lung injury of a heteropolysaccharide from Houttuynia cordata

Lishuang Zhou, Yukun Jiao, Jiayue Tang, Zhizhi Zhao, Haiyan Zhu, Yan Lu, Daofeng Chen

Summary: A study found that an acidic heteropolysaccharide, HCPM, extracted from Houttuynia cordata, has a therapeutic effect on acute lung injury induced by influenza A virus. HCPM can reduce inflammation and complement overactivation by inhibiting viral replication and regulating immune responses, thus alleviating lung and gut injuries.

Exploring the anticomplement components from Fagopyrum dibotrys for the treatment of H1N1-induced acute lung injury by UPLC-Triple-TOF-MS/MS

Xiaojiang Wang, Yukun Jiao, Haiyan Zhu, Yan Lu, Daofeng Chen

Summary: In this study, a procyanidins-enriched fraction (PCE) was obtained from the rhizome of Fagopyrum dibotrys through anticomplement activity-guided fractionation. PCE was found to alleviate H1N1-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in mice by reducing weight loss, decreasing lung index, and regulating cytokine levels in lung tissue. The structure-activity relationship analysis showed that degree of polymerization (DP) and galloylation were closely related to the anticomplement activity of procyanidins.

Shui-Yuan Yang, Lin-Feng Guo, Yang Liu, Ji-Bin Zou, Hai-Yan Zhu, Yan Lu, Dao-Feng Chen

Summary: The pericarps of Trichosanthes kirilowii are traditionally used to treat cough. Its ethanol extract has shown effective therapeutic effects on acute lung injury caused by H1N1. A study on the extract resulted in the discovery of ten new terpenoids, including seven monoterpenoids and three cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, as well as eleven known terpenoids. Among these compounds, twelve monoterpenoids and five cucurbitane-type triterpenoids exhibited anticomplement activity in vitro. Two representative terpenoids, 8 and 11, significantly attenuated H1N1-induced acute lung injury in vivo by inhibiting complement overactivation and reducing inflammatory responses.
