Background: Severely obese individuals who seek lifestyle interventions have impaired quality of life (QoL). Research suggests that physical activity (PA) plays a role in weight reduction and improved health in this group, but knowledge about the association of PA with QoL outcomes is sparse and inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a higher level of PA was independently associated with higher QoL in severely obese individuals prior to the beginning of a lifestyle intervention. Methods: During 2010, a total of 49 severely obese individuals who began a lifestyle intervention programme in Western Norway agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected prior to the beginning of the intervention. QoL was measured by a one-item scale on life satisfaction and the SF-36, PA was measured by an accelerometer, and clinical data were collected by health staff. Linear regression analyses were used to determine the associations between PA and QoL outcomes (life satisfaction, physical functioning, and mental health), adjusting for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). Results: In the adjusted analyses, we found positive relationships between PA and life satisfaction (Stand. coeff. 0.39, p = 0.024) and physical functioning (Stand. coeff. 0.34, p = 0.025). There was no association between PA and mental health (Stand. coeff. 0.15, p = 0.376). Conclusion: This study detected associations between objectively measured PA and life satisfaction as well as physical functioning in a group of severely obese individuals before they began a lifestyle intervention programme.

Kolotkin, Havard Luong Thorsen, Gunnar Mellgren, Tone Nygaard Flolo

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for severe obesity, showing that RYGB resulted in higher weight loss and remission rates of main obesity-related comorbidities, while SG had fewer major early complications.

Allostatic load as predictor of mortality: a cohort study from Lolland-Falster, Denmark

Neda Esmailzadeh Bruun-Rasmussen, George Napolitano, Christian Christiansen, Stig Egil Bojesen, Christina Ellervik, Randi Jepsen, Knud Rasmussen, Elsebeth Lynge

Summary: This study investigates the association between individual biomarkers and allostatic load (AL) across three physiological systems (cardiovascular, inflammatory, metabolic) and all-cause mortality. The results show that elevated physiological burden measured by mid and high AL index is associated with a steeper increase in mortality than individual biomarkers.

Effect of Optimal Alcohol-Based Hand Rub among Nurse Students Compared with Everyday Practice among Random Adults; Can Water-Based Hand Rub Combined with a Hand Dryer Machine Be an Alternative to Remove E. coli Contamination from Hands?

Summary: Efficient hand hygiene is crucial for preventing microbial transmission. Alcohol-based hand rub is recommended, but a water-based hand rub procedure was also investigated. The study compared 27 nurse students and 26 random adults, and found that the ABHR method was more effective at reducing colony forming units than the WBHR method.

Factors associated with leakage in patients with an ostomy: A cross-sectional study

Kirsten Lerum Indrebo, Anny Aasprang, Torill Elin Olsen, John Roger Andersen

Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between sociodemographic and clinical data, patient's knowledge and skills, relationship to healthcare professionals, and leakage from an ostomy. The most important risk factors for leakage were found to be non-adherence to international guidelines for ostomy placement, poor relationship with healthcare professionals, non-cancerous diagnosis, lack of knowledge and skills in ostomy care, use of convex baseplate, oval ostomy, and dependence on others for ostomy care. The independent variables in the model explained 31% of the variance in leakage.

A cross-sectional study of the association between family conflicts and children's health: Lolland-Falster Health Study

Summary: Family conflicts have a detrimental effect on children's health. This study examines the association between household conflicts and the health of children aged 6-12 years and explores how this association may vary by socioeconomic status and multimorbidity in the household. The results show that conflicts are negatively associated with children's health, and this association varies depending on the level of multimorbidity and socioeconomic status.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between cervical screening coverage in Denmark and socioeconomic, lifestyle, and biological factors. The study found that women who did not participate in the health survey had lower coverage. In multivariate analysis, predictors of low coverage included older age, being without a partner, retirement, smoking, poor self-rated health, elevated blood pressure, and elevated glycated hemoglobin.

Lower levels of physical activity volume are beneficial, and it's never too late to start: Results from the HUNT Study, Norway

Hans Johan Breidablik, Karl Ove Hufthammer, Vegar Rangul, Jon Roger Andersen, Eivind Meland, Oystein Hetlevik, Tina Lokke Vie

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between different patterns of physical activity over 36 years and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. It also investigated if this association varied by gender and body mass levels, and how changes in physical activity were related to mortality for individuals who were initially physically inactive. The results showed that engaging in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per week was associated with a significant reduction in mortality, emphasizing the importance of promoting all levels of physical activity in public health campaigns.

Summary: In the Danish population, approximately 10% of adults have undiagnosed, poorly regulated, or potentially sub-regulated diabetes. Therefore, it is important to provide relevant healthcare intervention for these individuals. A predictive model was built based on data from the Lolland-Falster Health Study, which was conducted in a disadvantaged health area of Denmark.

Experiences and results from using a novel clinical feedback system in routine stoma care nurse follow-up of patients with an ostomy: a longitudinal study

Kirsten Lerum Indrebo, Anny Aasprang, Torill Elin Olsen, John Roger Andersen

Summary: Studies show that patients struggle with adjustment to the ostomy in a broad spectrum of physical and psychosocial factors, and stoma care nurse follow-up is necessary. The study aimed to explore patient satisfaction and experiences using digital questionnaires before each consultation in stoma care nurse ostomy follow-up and to study adjustment to ostomy and health-related quality of life in routine follow-up 3,6 and 12 months after ostomy surgery. The results showed that the patients were satisfied with their follow-up using questionnaires before consultations and experienced improvements in daily activities, knowledge and skills, health, and health-related quality of life.

Overweight, Weight Loss and Self-reported Global Life Satisfaction - The Lolland-Falster Health Study

Summary: Obesity is associated with lower life satisfaction, and higher BMI is negatively correlated with self-reported global life satisfaction. Weight loss among individuals with BMI >= 25 is also associated with lower life satisfaction. However, in individuals with BMI >= 25 and good self-reported health, there is no relationship between weight loss and life satisfaction.

Summary: This study examined the determinants of non-participation in a health examination survey conducted in a rural, socioeconomically deprived area in Denmark. The study found that only about one third of the invited subjects participated, which is relatively high compared with other recent health examination surveys in Denmark. The non-participation rate showed a relatively flat social gradient across the studied determinants.
