BackgroundThe matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) can decompose extracellular matrix (ECM) components and brake down basement membranes and, thus, promote tumor local invasion and metastasis. MethodsWe studied 41 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oropharynx who underwent surgical treatment. Material was diagnosed by routine procedure and examined by immunohistochemical analysis and dot blot technique. We searched for correlations between expressions of MMPs, such as MMP-2 and MMP-9 and their tissue inhibitors TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 and treatment outcome. ResultsWe found cytoplasmic expression of analyzed proteins, both in cancer cells and tumor stroma. The expression of analyzed antigens was higher in patients with lymph node metastases comparing patients without lymph node involvement. ConclusionOur data suggest that microenvironment changes are one of key factors in tumor progression. Divergent expression of MMPs and their inhibitors might be used as prognostic factor of oropharyngeal carcinoma progression. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 37: 418-422, 2015

Impact of Isolation on Adenoid Size and Symptoms in Preschool Children Who Previously Qualified for Adenoidectomy: A Case-Control Study

Aleksander Zwierz, Krystyna Masna, Karol Zwierz, Maksymilian Bojkowski, Pawel Burduk

Summary: This study found that isolating preschool children for 3 months can stabilize the bacterial microbiome of the nose and nasopharynx, significantly affecting the number of recurrent upper respiratory tract infections and nasal patency. The only symptom related to adenoid hypertrophy was snoring, and there was a weak correlation between the prevalence of infections and the size of the adenoid. The adenoid size decreased by approximately 5.4% during the isolation period and was correlated with residual mucus in the nasopharynx.

CDK9 inhibitors in multiple myeloma: a review of progress and perspectives

Jedrzej Borowczak, Krzysztof Szczerbowski, Navid Ahmadi, Lukasz Szylberg

Summary: Currently, multiple myeloma is considered an incurable disease, but CDK9 inhibitors have emerged as a potential treatment option to overcome resistance and prolong survival. By downregulating gene expressions and restoring tumor-suppressive functions, CDK9 inhibitors have shown promising efficacy in preclinical trials and synergistic effects with other drugs.

The Long-Term Effects of 12-Week Intranasal Steroid Therapy on Adenoid Size, Its Mucus Coverage and Otitis Media with Effusion: A Cohort Study in Preschool Children

Aleksander Zwierz, Krystyna Masna, Krzysztof Domagalski, Pawel Burduk

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the long-term effects of a 12-week course of topical steroids on adenoid size, mucus, and middle ear effusion. The results indicated that there was no significant effect on adenoid size, mucus, and otitis media with effusion (OME) three to six months after finishing the treatment. Therefore, the decision of adenoidectomy and tympanostomy should not be procrastinated.

The Prognostic Role of CDK9 in Bladder Cancer

Summary: This article investigates the prognostic role of cyclin-dependent kinase 9 expression in urothelial carcinoma. The results show that high CDK9 expression is associated with a better prognosis, tumor grade, stage, and invasiveness, contradicting previous findings. CDK9 may play a crucial role in the early stages of urothelial carcinoma.

The Role of Inflammatory Cytokines in the Pathogenesis of Colorectal Carcinoma-Recent Findings and Review

Jedrzej Borowczak, Krzysztof Szczerbowski, Mateusz Maniewski, Adam Kowalewski, Marlena Janiczek-Polewska, Anna Szylberg, Andrzej Marszalek, Lukasz Szylberg

Summary: Inflammation plays a significant role in colon cancer development, with cytokine networks in the intestines being critical for tissue homeostasis and inflammation regulation. Recent studies suggest that inflammation is more important in the serrated pathway than in the adenoma-carcinoma pathway. Interleukins have received attention for their potential role in CRC pathogenesis and promising results in clinical trials. The balance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors is crucial for maintaining homeostasis, and immune cells in the tumor microenvironment modulate immune sensitivity and aid cancer immune evasion.

Summary: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a disease closely related to human papillomavirus infection. The main treatment for lesions in the larynx or lower pharynx is microsurgical excision using a CO2 laser, but combined antiviral therapy can reduce the number of surgeries and prevent regrowth of the lesions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between ENT symptom occurrence and antibody titer in convalescent plasma, as well as the influence of age and gender on ENT manifestations of COVID-19. Antibody levels were measured in 346 blood donors with PCR-confirmed previous infection. ENT symptoms, antibody levels, age, and gender were statistically analyzed. The most common ENT symptoms were smell/taste disturbances, dry cough, sore throat, and dyspnea. Smell/taste disturbances were more common in younger patients and associated with lower antibody levels, while dry cough, dyspnea, and dizziness were associated with higher antibody levels.

Effect of Systemic Prednisone Treatment on Changes of Inflammation Markers in Chronic Rhinosinusitis

Malgorzata Wierzchowska, Paulina Kalinczak-Gorna, Magdalena Zwolinska, Joanna Ligmanowska, Justyna Durslewicz, Aleksander Zwierz, Bartosz Malinowski, Michal Wicinski, Pawel Burduk

Summary: We aimed to evaluate the effect of treatment with prednisone on nasal and systemic periostin and eotaxin expression, IgE in plasma and eosinophils in tissue. The results showed that treatment with prednisone significantly decreased the levels of periostin, eotaxin, and IgE in plasma, as well as reduced the number of eosinophils in tissue. These findings suggest the need for further research on inflammatory markers associated with chronic rhinosinusitis and the development of drugs that can selectively target inflammation.

The prognostic role of p53 and its correlation with CDK9 in urothelial carcinoma

Summary: This study found that high expression of p53 is associated with unfavorable clinical features in bladder cancer and is correlated with the expression of CDK9. CDK9 may influence p53 expression through interactions with p53 inhibitors. Confirming the crosstalk between p53 and CDK9 in bladder cancer may be an important step in explaining the mechanism of tumor progression in its early stages.
