Background An accurate system for predicting the survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) will be useful for deciding appropriate therapies. The prediction accuracy of prediction models can be improved by using molecular biomarkers. We constructed a nomogram for predicting the survival of patients with OSCC using clinical variables and molecular markers. Methods Protein 53 (p53), insulin-like growth factor II mRNA-binding protein 3 (IMP3), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), and HuR were localized immunohistochemistry in 96 patients with primary OSCC who underwent surgical resection between January 1994 and June 2003 at the Yonsei Dental Hospital in Seoul, Korea. Results On univariate and multivariate analysis, the expression of IMP3 was significantly associated with the risk of death. P53 was also significantly associated with survival of OSCC in the case of negative IMP3 and the prediction accuracy was improved by including these 2 factors in the prediction model. Conclusion Survival in OSCC can be predicted more accurately by using biomarkers. The constructed nomogram predicted survival after treatment for an individual patient with OSCC, and it can be practically used as a tool to help decide which adjuvant treatment is most appropriate. Clinical Characteristics and Relevance of Oral Candida Biofilm in Tongue Smears

Eunae Cho, YounJung Park, Ki-Yeol Kim, Dawool Han, Hyun Sil Kim, Jeong-Seung Kwon, Hyung-Joon Ahn

Summary: The study investigated the clinical relevance of Candida hyphae in non-pseudomembranous oral candidiasis, revealing significant differences in clinical factors among different hyphae groups. It suggested that low-grade hyphae infection might represent a subclinical state of OC, and identified a new subtype named MNSC.

Prediction of Chemosensitivity in Multiple Primary Cancer Patients Using Machine Learning

Summary: The study aimed to identify chemosensitive gene sets and compare the predictive accuracy of response to drug treatment based on both genomic features and cancer types through machine learning. The results showed that predictive models based on genomic information performed better than those based on cancer types, indicating that specific gene expression can help choose the most effective therapeutic drug for cancer patients with multiple primary cancers.

Risk factor analysis of dental implants in patients with irradiated head and neck cancer

Joongyo Lee, Jason Joon Bock Lee, In-Ho Cha, Kyung Ran Park, Chang Geol Lee

Summary: This study investigated dental implant outcomes in patients who had received radiotherapy for head and neck malignancies. The mean radiation dose at the implant site was identified as an independent prognostic factor for implant survival. Dental implants can be safely considered when the mean radiation dose is lower than 38 Gy.

Summary: This study aimed to report cases of denosumab-induced MRONJ and investigate the factors affecting its occurrence. The study found that MRONJ can develop as chronic inflammation even without invasive dental treatment. Therefore, preventive dental treatment is necessary before initiating denosumab treatment.

Implication of COPB2 Expression on Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Pathogenesis

Taiqin Chen, Ki-Yeol Kim, Yeongjoo Oh, Hei Cheul Jeung, Kee Yang Chung, Mi Ryung Roh, Xianglan Zhang

Summary: The present study reveals that COPB2 may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of cSCC and can serve as a novel predictive prognostic biomarker and immunotherapeutic target. The findings have significant implications for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cSCC and the development of personalized treatment strategies.

Risk Factors of Microscopically Tumor-Free Surgical Margins for Recurrence and Survival of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients

Meiling Pei, Dawool Han, Ki-Yeol Kim, Dong Wook Kim, Woong Nam, Hyung Jun Kim, Eunae Sandra Cho, Hyun Sil Kim, In-Ho Cha, Xianglan Zhang

Summary: The width and dysplasia of surgical margins were not significantly associated with the outcome of OSCC patients. Higher age, Axin2, and Snail expression had independent impacts on worsened overall survival. Lesion site, extranodal extension, perineural invasion, and Snail expression had independent impacts on worsened recurrence-free survival. Axin2 and Snail are potential predictive biomarkers for the risk assessment of surgical margins in OSCC.

Summary: This study suggests guidelines for predicting perforators of anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flaps using CTA imagery. The results show that CTA has a high positive predictive value and sensitivity for perforator detection. Although there may be some discrepancies between CTA and intraoperative findings in terms of the location of perforators, the addition of Doppler imaging can help improve accuracy.

Summary: Although some surgeons prefer other methods, the radial forearm flap is still the most reliable option for soft tissue reconstruction in the head and neck area. To minimize donor site complications, the authors developed a new technique for harvesting the radial forearm flap using a robotic device. The study found no significant difference in flap outcome between the robot-assisted and conventional methods, but the robot-assisted method had a longer harvesting time.
