The spatial and temporal distribution of the toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis ovata was investigated along the Conero Riviera (northern Adriatic Sea) during summer 2007 to evaluate the role of substratum, depth and hydrodynamic conditions on bloom dynamics. Sampling was carried out from April to November on different substrata (seaweeds, mollusc shells and rocks) and in the water column. O. ovata bloom started in September, reaching maximum values in the first week of October (1.7 x 10(6) cells g(-1) fw corresponding to 21.0 x 10(6) cells g(-1) dw and 6.2 x 10(4) cells cm(-2)) and completely disappearing at the beginning of November. On average, the abundances of O. ovata on rocks were significantly higher than those on seaweeds. Seaweeds with branched thalli supported higher values of epiphytes than non-branched ones. The abundances of O. ovata were significantly higher in sheltered than in exposed sites indicating a major role of hydrodynamism in regulating bloom dynamics. O. ovata abundances showed a marked decrease with depth with significantly lower values at depths >3 m. In the northern Adriatic, bloom development did not show any relationship with temperature, as the peak occurred when temperature values were decreasing. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Toxic marine microalgae and noxious blooms in the Mediterranean Sea: A contribution to the Global HAB Status Report

Adriana Zingone, Laura Escalera, Katerina Aligizaki, Margarita Fernandez-Tejedor, Amany Ismael, Marina Montresor, Patricija Mozetic, Seyfettin Tas, Cecilia Totti

Summary: The spatial distribution of toxic marine microalgal species and the impacts of harmful algal events in the Mediterranean Sea were reviewed based on OBIS databases. Mainly affecting human health and aquaculture, toxicity-related events are not frequent in the MS.

Integrative taxonomy of the Pseudo-nitzschia (Bacillariophyceae) populations in the NW Adriatic Sea, with a focus on a novel cryptic species in the P. delicatissima species complex

Sonia Giulietti, Tiziana Romagnoli, Melania Siracusa, Simone Bacchiocchi, Cecilia Totti, Stefano Accoroni

Summary: Species of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia are common in the northern Adriatic Sea and during 2018-2019, six different taxa were identified through morphological and molecular analysis, with P. cf. arenysensis revealed as a cryptic species within the P. delicatissima complex. No domoic acid production was detected in the studied strains.

Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) and Vibrio alginolyticus in Mussels from Central Adriatic Sea (Italy): Are They Closely Related?

Summary: Tetrodotoxins (TTXs) have raised concerns in Europe in recent years, prompting the European Food Safety Authority to set recommended thresholds for TTX in mollusks and call for data collection to conduct a more comprehensive risk assessment. A study in the Marche region of Italy assessed TTX levels in mussels harvested in 2018-2019, as well as the presence of Vibrio spp. carrying genes associated with TTX biosynthesis. The study found some mussels contaminated with TTXs, but further investigation is needed to determine the potential threat of TTXs in the region.

Nitzschia gobbii sp. nov. (Bacillariophyceae): a common but overlooked planktonic diatom species from the northwestern Adriatic Sea

Summary: A new diatom species, Nitzschia gobbii sp. nov., was discovered and described in the Adriatic Sea, showing distinct morphological and genetic characteristics from other common species in the region. Despite its resemblance to other species, Nitzschia gobbii strains do not produce detectable levels of domoic acid.

Phytoplankton and environmental drivers at a long-term offshore station in the northern Adriatic Sea (1988-2018)

Francesca Neri, Tiziana Romagnoli, Stefano Accoroni, Alessandra Campanelli, Mauro Marini, Federica Grilli, Cecilia Totti

Summary: This study analyzed a long-term (1988-2018) data set of phytoplankton and physico-chemical parameters in an offshore station of the LTER Senigallia-Susak transect. The study found that the annual cycle of phytoplankton in this area differed from that in coastal areas, with the highest abundance in June and the lowest in November. The main component of the phytoplankton community was phytoflagellates, and their abundance paralleled that of the total phytoplankton. The summer phytoplankton maximum was mainly explained by the allochthonous input of DIN and PO4 brought by low salinity waters.

Palytoxin-Analogues Accumulation in Natural Mussel Banks during an Ostreopsis cf. ovata Bloom

Stefano Accoroni, Marika Ubaldi, Simone Bacchiocchi, Francesca Neri, Melania Siracusa, Maria Giovanna Buonomo, Alessandra Campanelli, Cecilia Totti

Summary: The bioaccumulation of OVTX toxins in mussels was found to be correlated with the abundance of Ostreopsis during blooms. The study suggests that the Italian guidelines for managing Ostreopsis blooms are effective in preventing human intoxication through mussel contamination.

Summary: Wild mussels in the Adriatic Sea of Italy are contaminated with Tetrodotoxins (TTXs), possibly due to the presence of Vibrio alginolyticus strain and phytoplankton. Further investigation is needed to determine the role of these factors as sources of contamination.

Phytoplankton communities in a coastal and offshore stations of the northern Adriatic Sea approached by network analysis and different statistical descriptors

Francesca Neri, Tiziana Romagnoli, Stefano Accoroni, Marika Ubaldi, Angela Garzia, Andrea Pizzuti, Alessandra Campanelli, Federica Grilli, Mauro Marini, Cecilia Totti

Summary: This study compared two long-term phytoplankton time series in the Northern Adriatic Sea and found that the coastal station was more variable and influenced by the Western Adriatic Current and riverine inputs. The offshore phytoplankton community showed higher biodiversity due to its more oligotrophic condition. Graph-network analysis was a useful tool to study the phytoplankton community. Evaluating the Good Environmental Status should consider oceanographic differences and use multiple statistical approaches.

Haplo-diplontic life cycle expands coccolithophore niche

Summary: Coccolithophores are marine calcifying phytoplankton with a haplo-diplontic life cycle. Calcified haploid coccolithophores generally make up a small portion of the total population, but can be significant contributors under certain environmental conditions. The haploid and diploid life cycle phases occupy contrasting niches, allowing coccolithophores to expand their niche by approximately 18.8%.

Summary: The study analyzed the ecology and seasonality of Pseudo-nitzschia species at a coastal station in the Adriatic Sea from 1988 to 2020, revealing varying abundances and characteristics across different seasons. The DNA sequence data identified several cryptic and pseudo-cryptic species within the Pseudo-nitzschia genus, emphasizing the importance of combining genetic analysis with traditional microscopy in ecological investigations.
