Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in England. The study found that VTE was a common complication in hospitalized patients and was associated with longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates.

Summary: VTE-associated hospitalisations are increasing among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and are associated with factors such as age, sex, type of IBD, race, and chronic corticosteroid use. Continued efforts for education and risk reduction are crucial.

Summary: The management paradigm for acute pulmonary embolism has evolved with the availability of advanced treatment modalities, coinciding with the development of pulmonary embolism response teams. Interhospital transfer of critically ill PE patients is a current unmet need, requiring medical optimization, defined roles of emergency services, and responsibilities of referring and receiving centers.

Summary: Nontrombotic pulmonary embolism refers to the embolization of different types of materials into pulmonary circulation. Its clinical presentation and laboratory findings are nonspecific, leading to misdiagnosis as pulmonary thromboembolism. Understanding the risk factors and specific symptoms is crucial for rapid and correct diagnosis.

Summary: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common cardiovascular emergency, and despite advancements in medical technology, patients are still at risk of complications. Pulmonary rehabilitation can improve the recovery and prognosis of PE patients, but further research is needed to assess its effectiveness and safety.

Summary: The study evaluates the utility of a modified simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) in elderly patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism, and concludes that the new model has higher sensitivity for predicting short-term mortality in this population. Safe outpatient therapy may benefit a minority of these patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between heart rate and pulmonary embolism outcomes and found that a higher heart rate is associated with increased all-cause and PE-related mortality. Modifying the heart rate cutoff in the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) and the Bova score can improve the prognostication of patients with PE.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the sex differences in patients with PE undergoing percutaneous thrombectomy in the United States from 2016 to 2018. The study found that female patients had a higher risk of procedural bleeding, blood transfusions, vascular complications, and in-hospital mortality compared to male patients. Rating: 8 out of 10.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence of PE in patients with COVID-19, revealing that 25% of COVID-19 patients were diagnosed with PE. The study also found that PE was associated with male sex, smoking, as well as increased levels of d-dimer, lactate dehydrogenase, ferritin, and interleukin-6. Additionally, d-dimer levels greater than 1600 ng/mL showed high sensitivity in identifying patients who required CT pulmonary angiography.

Summary: High BMI is associated with severe COVID-19, but findings on the need for intensive care and mortality are mixed. This study found no association between BMI and 30-day mortality risk, but BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² was associated with the need for intensive care, particularly in women.
