Diazotization-esterification mechanism was employed to synthesize 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthyl bis(ƞ5-cyclopentadienyl)iron carboxylate, (EP) which was further embedded on the synthetic polyvinylbenzylchloride (PEP). The synthesized ligand and polymer were characterized using spectroscopic techniques. Electrospun functionalized nanofiber composing of ferrocene side chains and polyvinylbenzylchloride was fabricated in ethanol on a mechanical shaker for 10days at 25 °C. Owing to the intrinsic properties of the newly produced nanostructured material, it was applied in the removal of cyanide ions in an aqueous medium. Using a sorbent dosage of 0.01g in 8 mg/L CN- concentration, 92.2 % decyanidation capacity was observed for PEP while 70.83 % was obtained for the free PVBC (P). This unique efficiency displayed by this functionalized synthesized polymer makes PEP highly recommended for commercial and industrial application as decyanidating agents.
