I am studying for a Ph.D. in the United States. My advisor is not an academician. The paper was submitted through direct submission in July and was sent for review after 13 days. The external review was completed in less than two weeks. The feedback came back as a rejection because the editor believed that two months would not be enough time to complete the experiments. However, none of the three reviewers provided very negative comments, and the overall preference of the editor was positive. Therefore, we submitted an appeal in September, and the next day PNAS replied that they had received it. In the second week, they replied asking for a point-by-point response. We submitted it at the end of September, and yesterday we received a response from the editor agreeing to revise it extensively within 60 days. I am currently working hard on the experiments, hoping that this revision will be accepted smoothly.

Peer review. Last October, I submitted a paper to PNAS and it was sent for review within a week. After a month, all three reviewers provided very high-level comments and requested additional experiments. The paper was rejected, but I was given an opportunity to resubmit. I have a strange fondness for PNAS as the reviewers were very professional and helped improve the quality of my article. I am currently preparing additional experiments to resubmit in May, hoping for acceptance.
