In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars may be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

Award Activity

The Fulbright Pembroke College Oxford Visiting Professorship contributes to the intellectual life of the college through seminars, public lectures, and curriculum development in any discipline related to politics and international relations.

During their three-month award, the Fulbright Visiting Professor will be expected to design a one-term (8-week) program of academic activities, attractive also to a wider audience, that is connected broadly to the political, diplomatic, or general legacy of Senator Fulbright’s commitment to internationalism in relationships between states and their diplomacy and in bringing together individuals from across the globe. Applications are welcome therefore from scholars focused on international politics construed widely, to include international relations, international and comparative political economy, and the politics of international law and human rights.

Dates of Oxford terms can be found here. The hosts are open to applications for any of the university’s three terms but applicants may wish to consider coming for the summer term, which normally starts at about the same time as the Spring Semester ends in many US universities.

It is expected that the Fulbright Visiting Professor will engage with students and faculty at both the University of Oxford Department of Politics and International Relations and at Pembroke College.

Award Length and Period

The Fulbright-Oxford Pembroke Distinguished Scholar Award is a 3 month award, including one full Oxford academic term, in Pembroke College, University of Oxford.

Grants may begin any time after September 1, 2024 but before April 30, 2025. Grants dates should include the period of a whole Oxford term: term dates can be found here. The hosts are open to applications for any of the university’s three terms but applicants may wish to consider coming for the summer term, which normally starts at about the same time as the spring semester ends in many US universities.

Applications are sought in all appropriate specializations within Political Science and International Relations.

Special Features

In addition to accomodation and stipend, the Fulbright Visiting Professorship will be supported in this program by a research allowance and research assistance from the Department of Politics and International Relations. Accommodation in the Fulbright Suite (suitable for a couple only) and meals for the grantee will be provided by Pembroke College, which will also confer the title of Visiting Fellow to the Fulbright Scholar.

The Department of Politics and International Relations will contribute £1,000 of support for research expenses to cover a three month period (about $1,250 as of December 2022), and will provide up to 30 hours of logistical support.
