The ligand, EP was synthesized via esterification process, after which was characterized and functionalized on both nanosized bio and synthetic polymers. These dual-mode functionalized polymeric materials, based on chitosan and polyvinylbenzyl chloride, were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope, fourier transform infra-red and ultra violet / visble spectrophotometer after which were applied in the removal of cyanide ions in aqueous medium. Exposing both materials under the same conditioned parameters, comparative studies revealed that the functionalized polyvinylbenzyl chloride with EP, PEP exhibited better decyanidation capacity than the variant of chitosan, CEP. However, the functionalized polymeric materials are better decyanidating agents than the unfunctionalized.
