The managing editor of this journal, Emile Haye, who is a French person, is simply a rubbish. Both of my submissions were rejected by him, claiming that they did not fit the scope of the journal. The first time, we thought it might be because the proportion of surface research in the paper was not significant. However, the second time, the submission was completely about surface science, which had been published in similar research in this journal before. Moreover, it was clearly indicated in the cover letter and graphical abstract. But this person casually rejected it with the reason of deviating from the journal's scope. Out of anger, I wrote a complaint letter to the editorial department about this person, but they replied that they would not make any changes. It shows that the managing editor has a significant power.

2022.8.7 Under Review
2022.9.2 The editor sent me an email informing me that they have just found the second reviewer and it might take a bit longer.
2022.9.16 Major Revision was given to me with a two-month revision period. There were a total of 22 comments from three reviewers. The comments from the first and third reviewers were very professional and they addressed my concerns. Some testing needs to be done, but no additional data is required. The second reviewer recommended publication.

I hope for a positive outcome.

I would like to inquire about whether experimental or theoretical papers on organic molecules related to the fields of optical physics and photochemistry can be submitted to this journal. I have also heard that journals like Small, MH, AOM, and Carbon are all in the second quartile. I have previously heard negative evaluations about this journal, so why has it been classified as a first-quartile journal?

xiaoyuu123 2022-10-16

This journal is very slow.

xiaoyuu123 2022-10-16

It took two months for them to come back with the review comments. One of the reviewers gave very professional suggestions, while the other reviewer seemed like a student, raising more than ten questions that were all about my English writing, such as the usage of certain terms and capitalization. It felt like they were editing an English composition. In the end, they still rejected my submission. This journal seems to be very slow; other journals would have gone online within two months. Moreover, the expertise in the review process is not strong. I do not recommend submitting to this journal and also suggest the editors to pay attention to the expertise of the reviewers when selecting them.

Very fast and smooth submission experience, thanks to editor Carlos Alejandro Figueroa.

Applied Surface Science deserves to be called a veteran journal in the field of surface science. The review process is rigorous, and the reviewers ask very professional questions. The author's main research direction is traditional thermal catalytic oxidation, and this is the first short paper after joining the company. Thanks to ASS Journal and Professor Han, the Korean editor, for their fast handling of the manuscript. Although the author spent the entire seven-day National Day holiday revising the paper this year, it was accepted on the 10th, which is very exciting!

Here is the submission process for reference:

August 25, 2022: Submitted
August 30, 2022: With editor
September 2, 2022: Under review
September 17, 2022: Major revision, two reviewers, estimated one major revision and one minor revision.
A total of 22 review comments were received. (The editor required the revised paper to be returned within 3 weeks)
October 7, 2022: Submitted revised manuscript
October 9, 2022: Under review
October 10, 2022: Accepted!

Finally, I hope this sharing of experience can be helpful to everyone, and I also hope that everyone's scientific research journey goes smoothly and articles are published successfully. (October 11, 2022)

Is it that slow? I think an average review period of 2.4 months is still acceptable. I was planning to submit, but it's too slow.

木子 2022-10-09

The colloids and interfaces submitted, I suggest transferring them to the application of surface science. I agree with transferring them and on October 5th, there will be a review by the editor. On October 8th, the decision will be in process. Does this mean it will be rejected?

Leo 2022-10-07

Submitted on 9.27, it has been 10 days and it still hasn't been reviewed (super helpless).

啦啦啦766 2022-10-07

The submission is approaching two months, and it has been under review for almost one and a half months. The initial review has not yielded any results yet, and the speed is concerning. There may be a large number of manuscripts awaiting processing at the moment, so those in a rush should exercise caution before submitting!

Leo 2022-10-04

The third review gave three minor suggestions. I returned on the same day. However, the editor Opila has been delaying for over a week and has not submitted it for review. Did they go on vacation?

Betty 2022-10-04

Why did we chase the progress of the comprehensive review a week ago, which showed that one reviewer had completed it, but now there are no reviewers who have completed it?

"Desk reject" in English refers to the act of rejecting a submitted manuscript or research paper without sending it out for peer review.

After six days, with the editor's decision in process, does it mean that it has been rejected directly?

涂强子 2022-09-26

After six days, it directly changed to "Decision in Process" with the editor. Does this mean it has been rejected?

Just want to ask, brother, can this journal still maintain its ranking in Zone 1 in the upcoming latest partition that will be released in December this year?

Goodwill 2022-09-20

The impact factor of 7 in the field of surface engineering is already considered a top-tier journal. Among the subcategories of coatings and films, Applied Surface Science has the highest impact factor. Recently, Web of Science introduced the JCI factor, a normalized indicator replacing the impact factor. This journal is ranked in the Q1 zone for all JCI subcategories, and it is also in the top tier for both the main category and subcategory according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Thus, this journal truly deserves its status as a top-tier publication.

Goodwill 2022-09-20

In 2021, Advanced Materials published a total of 1871 papers, with 1089 papers authored by Chinese researchers. The proportion of papers from Chinese universities/institutions in Advanced Materials is as high as 58%. Does this mean that the journal has poor quality? No, it only indicates the friendliness towards Chinese scientists. As for the warning in 2020, it does not exist. It was a "reminder" about the citation count of one particular paper. One cannot dismiss an entire journal based on one paper, and such a reminder is unlikely to appear again in Appl. Surf. Sci. This journal has consistently maintained high quality (it has been a top journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the past decade, and it is also listed as a JCR Q1 journal in the Web of Science, with all four subject categories in Q1). The acceptance rate is only around 10%, with most papers being rejected.

Goodwill 2022-09-20

This magazine has always maintained a high quality (for nearly the past ten years, it has been a top journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is also classified as JCR Q1 in the Web of Science, with all four subcategories being in Q1 as well), with an acceptance rate of only around 10%.

There were two reviewers with four questions, but the handling speed of the editor for submission was slow. Both reviewers agreed to accept during the second review. There was an abbreviation error in the coordinate unit in the figure (the editor did not approve of this abbreviation), but only minor revisions were requested. Overall, the process took a long time.

Because there was an author who did not click confirm, it was rejected, so it was resubmitted again, which wasted a lot of time.

The editor is Peter Schaaf, and he processes manuscripts very quickly. However, it took over a month to find reviewers.

Applied Surface Science has been warned by JCR in 2020. In 2021, Chinese researchers accounted for 43.7% of its publications. Despite the downgrading of Small, Carbon, JMCA, and ACS AMI to the second tier, Applied Surface Science surprisingly upgraded to the first tier. It is truly difficult to understand.
