The IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing addresses the growing field of applications in Earth observations and remote sensing, and also provides a venue for the rapidly expanding special issues that are being sponsored by the IEEE Geosciences and Remote Sensing Society. The journal draws upon the experience of the highly successful “IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing” and provide a complementary medium for the wide range of topics in applied earth observations. The ‘Applications’ areas encompasses the societal benefit areas of the Global Earth Observations Systems of Systems (GEOSS) program. Through deliberations over two years, ministers from 50 countries agreed to identify nine areas where Earth observation could positively impact the quality of life and health of their respective countries. Some of these are areas not traditionally addressed in the IEEE context. These include biodiversity, health and climate. Yet it is the skill sets of IEEE members, in areas such as observations, communications, computers, signal processing, standards and ocean engineering, that form the technical underpinnings of GEOSS. Thus, the Journal attracts a broad range of interests that serves both present members in new ways and expands the IEEE visibility into new areas.

2021-01-20 Submission: Submitted the manuscript before going home for the Lunar New Year and anxiously waited for the results.
2021-03-23 Major Revision: The reviewer's comments were very pertinent and helpful; they provided comments and suggestions from different perspectives.
2021-04-19 Revised: Although there weren't many comments, I carefully analyzed and made revisions to each one, and submitted the revised version the day before the deadline.
2021-05-27 Minor Revision: I was confident that it would be accepted directly, but as the waiting time grew longer, I became more anxious. Fortunately, there were very few suggestions for minor revisions, and they were mostly regarding details.
2021-06-04 Revised: I took the comments seriously and shared the entire manuscript with my colleagues and classmates for feedback before submitting it.
2021-06-04 Accepted: It was accepted on the same day, the speed was so fast that I couldn't believe it.

The whole process took about 4 months, including one month and one week for major and minor revisions. The journal left a very good impression on me, from the editor-in-chief, associate editors, to the reviewers, all were responsible and friendly. I hope it continues to improve!

Encountered a terrible reviewer. One reviewer suggested major revisions in the first round, and after submission, more major revisions were required. Another reviewer's comments were very pretentious, giving the impression that he is the most knowledgeable person in the industry. His attitude was extremely poor, and judging from the time taken for modifications, it was clear that he didn't actually spend much time reviewing the paper. He only submitted his comments right before the deadline. In the first round, major revisions were requested, followed by major revisions in the second round. In the third round, the paper was outright rejected. I addressed the issues raised by the first and second reviewers, and found many mistakes in the comments of the second reviewer. It was complete pretentiousness. Giving major revisions in the first and second rounds and then claiming lack of innovation in the third round - does this person even have any sense? The experience of submitting this paper was extremely poor. This kind of reviewer should be removed immediately.
