Aims and Scope
Ecology publishes articles that report on the basic elements of ecological research. Emphasis is placed on concise, clear articles documenting important ecological phenomena. The journal publishes a broad array of research that includes a rapidly expanding envelope of subject matter, techniques, approaches, and concepts: paleoecology through present-day phenomena; evolutionary, population, physiological, community, and ecosystem ecology, as well as biogeochemistry; inclusive of descriptive, comparative, experimental, mathematical, statistical, and interdisciplinary approaches.

Ecology is the flagship publication in the field of international ecology, with an annual publication of usually only over 200 articles. It particularly focuses on fundamental scientific issues in ecology, especially those related to community and ecosystem ecology, and has high requirements for the novelty, theoretical depth, reliability of data analysis, and logical writing of articles. In China, Ecology is often regarded as a benchmark for selecting outstanding and excellent young researchers. Experts often compare Journal of Ecology and Ecology, and in terms of their founding history, Journal of Ecology was actually established earlier. However, in general, it is more difficult to submit articles to Ecology than to Journal of Ecology. Sometimes, if one has a good dataset, completes popular data analysis, and tests a hypothesis, they may be able to publish in Journal of Ecology. But unless one can achieve a small point of innovation in theory by applying corresponding data, it is very difficult to publish in Ecology, even if they have a good dataset at hand. In other words, one can only publish in Ecology in the field of ecology if they have reached a certain level of "practice" (except when collaborating with influential researchers); this is also why some peers often say that Ecology may have its own "inner circle".
