Eligibility
Researchers who belong to research institution in Japan (such as a graduate school with a doctoral course; a department under such a graduate school; or a corporation that can apply for Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research –KAKENHI–) Post-graduate students are eligible to apply. Recommendation from the head of the institution to which the applicant belongs (e.g. Chancellor/President, Graduate School Dean, Faculty Dean, Director/Chairperson, Research Institute Director, direct superior, etc.) is required. There are no restrictions regarding nationality. Natural Sciences and Engineering: must be 45 or younger as of April 1 in the application year Humanities and Social Sciences: no age restrictions *Limited to researchers affiliated with research organizations in Japan. Applications from abroad are not accepted.
Description
The Kurata Grant is a research fund for the advancement of science and technology in Japan proposed by and established with a donation from the second president of Hitachi, Ltd., the late Chikara Kurata, in 1967. Natural Sciences and Engineering Creative and pioneering research by young researchers (age of 45 or under) which contributes to the solution of social challenges from an international perspective. Applications can be made in the three areas below and specific examples can be found in the separate Application Guidelines. An interdisciplinary research from a natural sciences and engineering perspective in these fields is also eligible. Ⅰ. Energy and the Environment Ⅱ. Urban Development and Transportation Ⅲ. Healthcare Humanities and Social Sciences Research which analyzes societal transformations brought about by advances in science and technology and the complex and interconnected issues which form the background of such from a humanities and social sciences perspective (society, culture, literature, history, philosophy, ethics, law, economics, etc.)in the exploration of the meaning and value of the development of science and technology and the forms that society can take.
