A candidate's 40th birthday must not occur before January 1 of the year of the congress at which the Fields Medals are awarded.Self-nominations are strongly discouraged.No person can receive more than one IMU Award*. An exception is that an individual can receive the Leelavati Prize in addition to one other IMU Award.* Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal/Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize, Chern Medal Award, and Leelavati Prize.

Description

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years on the occasion of the International Congress of Mathematicians to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement.
